While at first glance the Sony Ericsson W760i Mobile Phone looks like a very interesting handset, on further investigation it is good just maybe not quite as good as we first thought. However, on a more positive note it is Sony Ericsson’s first move into the GPS navigation market with an inbuilt tracker, using the Wayfinder Navigator subscription service (will Sony Ericsson receive a share of the income from the subscriptions?).

When you strip away the GPS service the Sony Ericsson W760i Mobile Phone starts to look like the more traditional music phone, and while it is one of the better music phones around, it was perhaps time for Sony Ericsson to spread their wings a little further? The phone itself is still rather compact at 103 mm x 48 mm x 15 mm and weighs an acceptable 103g.

The handset will be available in the second quarter of 2008 and will cover a range of networks which include UMTS 850, 2100, GSM 850, 900, 1800 and 1900. The Sony Ericsson W760i Mobile Phone comes with GPRS, EDGE , UMTS (3G) and HSDPA data systems and a useful 3.2 megapixel camera. The camera offers the traditional still and video services but just seems to be lacking that killer touch which you might have expected from a phone which promises so much at first sight.

With the Walkman logo plastered all over the phone it is hard not to see which market this handset is targeted at – the music end. The large display screen on the front is more than acceptable with 240 x 320 pixel resolution and able to accommodate 262,000 colour variations. The phone is easy to navigate, small enough to carry in your pocket and it does look the part (if not a little similar to the other 20 or so Walkman Phones on the market!). Internet and Bluetooth capabilities are also tucked away in the inner workings and there is the option to use additional memory stick capacity – something which is vital with people storing more and more music on their phones.

In summary the Sony Ericsson W760i Mobile Phone looks the part but comes up a little short on delivery. It is not much different from the earlier Walkman releases, although if you are after a music based phone then this is probably the one for you. It has to be hoped that 2008 will see the likes of Sony Ericsson the a few more chances in the market place and not hit us with the same old formats from yesteryear.
