Sony Announced Netbook Vaio W

Sony released its first sub-$500 VAIO today. Like most netbooks on the market, the VAIO W Series comes with 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, Intel Atom N280 processor and Windows XP. The VAIO W Series netbook will start cost $499

The VAIO W Series netbook comes with a a high-resolution 16:9 (1366×768) display. Jamming more pixels on the display means users won’t have to scroll as much compared to lower-resolution displays.

Sony’s netbooks will be available in pink, white and brown. The lid has a matte soft-touch finish. The interior of the white and brown netbooks will have a silver finish that complements the exterior colors. The pink W’s interior will have a silver-pink finish.

I spoke with a Kevin Sather, a Sony product manager, yesterday who said the standard three-cell battery will last up to three hours. An optional six-cell battery will be available in September. He said that Sony is targeting consumers who will be using the W Series netbooks at home since research shows that is where the majority of netbook users end up using them.

To make media sharing easier at home, the W Series comes with VAIO Media. This software makes it possible to stream multimedia content to any DLNA-enabled device, including the PS3, other PCs and select Sony Bravia HDTVs.

The Sony W Series netbooks come with a built-in webcam, Bluetooth and 802.11b/g/n.
Sony will sell a USB mouse for $29.99 in pink, black and silver. Matching sleeves are also available for $24.99.

The VAIO W Series is available for pre-order at SonyStyle.com and will be available at retail partners begining August 17.

Sony execs previously stated that the company would stay out of the netbook space and hoped the industry would avoid a “race to the bottom,” but the market for affordable computers is apparently too big for Sony to ignore.

Sony Vaio VGN-SR390 Laptop

When you talk about laptops, the Sony Vaio is certain to be among the tops brands one would think of.

The Sony VAIO SR390 can be one of the least expensive of the company’s ultraportable laptops but it also lacks the performance that can be found for less from other companies or with more features for the same cost.

It comes with a LED backlit display that provides some excellent color without producing too much glare from the glossy coating. The keyboard design is also very comfortable and easy to use.

The big problem with the VAIO SR390 is its cost. While it is relatively affordable for a Sony laptop, there are offerings from other brands that offer a similar level of features that cost less or provide even more features and performance for the same price. This makes the Sony really only a strong choice for those looking for a system with a very strong display or just have to own a Sony laptop.

Sony Vaio P Available from T-Mobile Germany for Only €599.95

The Vaio P is the most expensive netbook available so far but that might all change if you happen to live in Germany. T-Mobile Germany is offering the Vaio P fost just €599.95 if you pick a web’n’walk Connect L data plan. If you do the math, the notebook is €400 cheaper than purchasing it for the full, official Sony price. Would you get it now?

Sony Releases Pocketfit Netbook – VAIO P

News and leaks online have been revealed in small spurts about a new netbook from Sony, but now an “official” leak on a Sony website has confirmed that the machine is reality. It’s dubbed the Vaio Pocket, since it’s supposedly sized to fit into a pocket (albeit quite a big one.)

And, just as predicted, it’s not one of the typical “vanilla” netbooks: Sony has indeed sprinkled the machine with some Sony Vaio design magic which places it at the top end of the netbook market. Although the screen is a smallish 8-inches (to fit into the machine’s slender form), it’s a massive 1600×768-pixel job–neatly negating the problems of websurfing or word processing on a low pixel-count netbook screen. The screen is also LED-backlit for low-power requirements.

Inside it’ll have up to a 60GB hard drive, with an option for a 128GS solid-state drive–a large size not heard of in the netbook market. The Intel processor inside is not specified in the leaked imagery, but it’s likely the Atom Z520, with 512K cache and 533MHz front-side bus. Sadly the machine’s weight, battery-life span and price are filled with Xs or “NaN” errors in the copy, so we’ll likely have to wait until CES to find out more.

But since it looks like the Vaio Pocket is a netbook only in terms of size and choice of processor, don’t expect the Pocket to come cheap.
