Apple Netbook Concept

We are not sure if Apple has a netbook simmering this year, but if it looks anything like the above concept, they can be sure they have a winner in the mini-notebook segment too. The above concept was designed by Adam Benton for MacFormat and looks like an iPhone that’s had one too many meals and runs iPhone OS 3.0. The entire Home directory will be stored on a Apple cloud server and frequently used files are cached locally. For charging, the netbook can be docked and also connected to a variety of devices using its USB and FireWire ports. Integrated 3G connectivity to keep in sync with the Apple servers and Bluetooth A2DP audio profile round out its wireless options, and for those reticent about using the virtual keyboard, a hardware keyboard can also be paired via Bluetooth.

Sounds nice, right? Let us wait and see if Apple has something that matches this concept or ups the ante a bit more.

Apple’s Macs to Sell Cheaper; Netbook on the Way?

Despite having a great financial quarter and despite answering to Microsoft commercial campaign which shows everyone how a regular PC is just as good and way cheaper than a MacBook, Apple seems ready to do all that’s necessary in order to keep the customers interested in Apple laptops and desktops. Therefore the Cupertino-based company is willing to offer cheaper MacBooks and iMac lines in the near future while in the shadows the company will be working on a new tablet line meant to compete against those netbooks out there.

Apple still says no to an Apple netbook but all the signs point to a different directions. Rumors say that Apple and Verizon will be releasing an iPad this year while Quanta is delivering 10-inch displays to Apple. If it’s not an Apple netbook, what else could it be?

OCZ Technology Announces New Mini-PCIe SSDs

Future netbooks might pack one of the two new SSD versions announced by OCZ Technology. These SSD come in 16GB and 32GB capacities and they should be “affordable flash-based storage options to significantly increase the capacity for netbooks.

The two SSDs will be available in both SATA and PATA interfaces and as for speeds you can expect up to 110MB/sec read speeds and write speeds as high as 512MB/sec for SATA. PATA interface will offer you a lower 45MB/sec read and 35MB/sec write speeds. The SSDs are going to be available soon but we have no idea for what price.

Samsung’s VIA-powered NC20 netbook now available

The 12.1-inch Samsung NC20 netbook PC first revealed late in February is now available for purchase, priced at nearly $550. The computer features an unusually large 1280×800 display resolution and otherwise class-standard 160GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM. It most sharply breaks from the class average is via its use of a 1.3GHz VIA Nano processor instead of a much more common Intel Atom CPU. Otherwise, the large netbook includes a six-cell battery, which contributes to its 3.3lb weight, along with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functionality, a VGA output and three USB ports. The operating system of choice is Windows XP Home. The integrated graphics processor is the VIA Chrome9 HC3 IGP that uses a shared 128MB of memory. Rounding out the feature set are a 1.3-megapixel camera, built-in speakers and a 3-in-1 memory card reader.

Slim Acer Aspire One D250 makes European debut

The first market the Aspire One D250 will likely be available in is Europe, as the system now has its own product page on Acer’s European website. The 10.1-inch netbook was first spotted in February, and passed through the FCC earlier this month. The page reveals official specs for the sub-2.5lb, one-inch thick netbook, which uses Atom N270 or N280 processors and supports 3G broadband. Standard RAM is 2GB, while permanent storage consists of a 160GB hard drive preloaded with Windows XP Home. The display handles resolutions up to 1024×600; other specs include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a multiformat card reader and a 0.3-megapixel webcam, plus three USB 2.0 ports, VGA output, an Ethernet port and audio in/out jacks. The touchpad supports multi-touch inputs, while the keyboard is 89 percent the size of a standard PC’s.

The standard battery is a 2,200mAh three-cell rated at 3.15 hours of life, but can be supplanted by a 4400mAh six-cell unit rated at 6 hours, or a 5200mAh six-cell option capable of 7.5 hours. With the six-cell battery, weight rises to just under 2.8lbs. The D250 should be available in red, blue or black, but despite the product page, pricing and a release date have not been announced.

OCZ outs do-it-yourself Neutrino netbook

OCZ has officially announced its 10.1-inch Neutrino netbook, first shown during CeBIT at the beginning of March. Part of the company’s Do-It-Yourself (DIY) line-up, the computer can be upgraded by users without voiding the warranty. The Neutrino weighs just under 2.9lbs, and by default sports a 1024×600, LED-backlit screen, though it can be upgraded to a 1600×1200 display. Processing power comes from a 1.6GHz Atom CPU. Up to 2GB of RAM is supported, and users can choose from hard drives sized up to 250GB, or OCZ solid-state drives ranging in capacity from 30GB to 250GB. Standard fare includes a Wi-Fi module and a four-cell 2200mAh battery; video conferencing is handled through a built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam and microphone, while audio output is produced from 1.5W speakers.

Connections include an Ethernet port, VGA output, two USB 2.0 ports and a headphone jack. Users can order the Neutrino with Windows XP or gOS/Ubuntu Linux operating systems. No prices or release dates have been released, but the netbook is expected to become available soon.

Acer to Ship four CULV Notebooks, Hurt Apple?

Internal sources at Acer have reportedly claimed today that the company is planning four systems based on Intel’s CULV platform and could pose a significant threat to Apple. CENS hears that systems will launch as soon as April with 11.6-inch, 13-inch, 14-inch and 15-inch models appearing as part of the early lineup. Their technical details aren’t known, though the 13-inch versions would use magnesium alloys to give them strength without impacting weight.

Although the claim is potentially suspect as it contradicts reports that the affordable ultra low-voltage processors won’t be in notebooks until the summer, it backs claims that Dell, HP and other “large-sized international” computer companies are planning systems of their own that could arrive in May.

Regardless, the systems are already thought to likely dent sales of higher-end ultraportables from companies like Apple and Sony. Intel is known to be targeting systems between $599 and $1,299 with CULV and hopes to give both performance and size between slower, Atom-based netbooks and full-speed notebooks without the traditional $1,500 or higher prices of true ultraportables.

Apple has itself said it has “some ideas” for computers in the netbook class but has resisted their slow speeds and small sizes. It has also publicly resisted offering systems below $500 over quality concerns.

Lenovo Y650 Notebook

The Chinese electronic colossus, Lenovo, has just unleashed one of its newest ultraslim notebook, the Lenovo Y650 Notebook. This latest offering features advanced multimedia functions and mobile technology. It has 16-inch display, ideal for the movie buffs out there. It supports 1366 x 768 resolutions, enough for 720p videos. In order to maximize the audio and video quality, you can switch the mode to OneKey Theater, which will provide you a movie-like experience like no other.

The Lenovo Y650 Notebook has the latest NVIDIA graphic (GeForce G105M), which provides a remarkable cinematography for video games. It performs better than its precursors GeForce 9300 and GeForce 9200 as it sports eight processor cores and 64-bit memory bus.

Speaking of audio system, this notebook uses Dolby Home Theater Technology and JBL speakers. However, since it lacks a built-in subwoofer, it has inferior bass sound when put side by side with other notebooks that feature subwoofer sound system. The Lenovo Y650 Notebook has another notable feature – the intuitive interface that includes touch-sensitive slide bar, responsive keys, Desktop Navigation, and quick-response touchpad.

The notebook is targeted at mobile users, so it is not surprising that it is slim and lightweight. It also has multiple security features that include OneKey Rescue System and VeriFace 3.5 with LiveCheck With these security features, you will be sure that the notebook will protect your sensitive files from unauthorized access. Sale price: $1,399.

Verizon Wireless Confirms Plan to Sell Netbooks

Verizon Wireless is going to start selling netbooks soon. And to be more precise, Verizon will sell 3G-enabled netbooks by the end of the second quarter. For now we have no idea what netbooks are going to arrive from Verizon but we should assume that plenty of netbook makers out there will be interested in selling their netbooks under Verizon’s name. AT&T is already selling $99 Acer netbooks so we should assume similar prices to arrive from Verizon.

Samsung unveiles NC310 Netbook with HSDPA

Samsung unveiled a new netbook Samsung N310 followed up on the recent launch of the NC20 for the world’s release in the coming months. Samsung netbook N310 has a 10.1-inch LCD display and through a much bolder design with all-rounded edges, bright colors and a very conspicuous Samsung logo, 5 hour battery life on a stock battery that grows to 11 hours on an extended pack and the weight of this netbook is 1.23 kilograms, but it looks quite thick. Samsung hasn’t named the choice of processor other than an Intel Atom.

Other features of the Samsung N310 netbook includes 802.11g Wi-Fi, 160GB HDD, Bluetooth, card reader, webcam with 1.3 megapixels , 3 USB ports, and 3G networking is an option over HSDPA, while WiMAX (WiBro in Korea) provides 4G support. Samsung N310 runs with Windows XP, it is available in black, red and blue. No info on pricing or availability so far, stay tuned for more info.

It weighs 2.71 pounds and comes with an undisclosed Intel Atom processor, a 10.1-inch LCD display, 160GB hard drive, 5 hours of battery lofe, WiFi, Bluetooth, HSPA and WiBro connectivity, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, and three USB ports. So where’s the really premium part? Is it the price?

The Samsung NC10 has finally been released in Russia with an add-on. An added feature for this 4G netbook is that is supports WiMAX technology. The beginning of sales of the Samsung NC10 opens a door into new era in telecommunications.

Lenovo Teases Pocket Yoga Touchscreen Netbook

Lenovo this morning confirmed the existence of its mystery netbook by posting teaser images on its photo feed. The system is now called the Pocket Yoga and has both the ultra-wide, VAIO P-like display and leather-bound shell of leaked photos. Concept sketches, however, show the PC not only supporting a touchscreen for a stylus but a convertible design that would let the display flip backwards to use it as a very small tablet. The computer still doesn’t have specifications, though its size would likely dictate an Intel Atom or similar chip. Previous photos have also suggested it would have a built-in webcam as well as a seemingly trackpoint-like controller to back up the touch display.

Update: Lenovo said the notebook is described as an “experiment” from 2007 that, following the earlier leak, the company decided to show in more formal shots. It argued that the Pocket Yoga is “finished” but added that the company is always designing new products.

Remember when we talked you about the Kogan Agora netbook? We were wondering if the netbooks will be really created since the Android Agora phone was nowhere near completion at the time. Well the Australian manufacturer managed to actually deliver a netbook. It’s a 10-inch netbook which comes with an Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, 160GB of storage space, a 3-cell battery and gOS. Should you chose the PRO model you will be able to double the RAM and battery size. The netbooks will cost $320 and $355 respectively and they should be available in Australia sometime next month.

Apple Netbook Gets Confirmed?

It was only yesterday that we brought to your attention the fact that there’s a new rumor in town saying that a netbook is going to arrive later this year, despite Apple’s previous assurances that such a thing won’t happen.

And today the Dow Jones Newswire kind of confirmed the rumor. According to its sources, an Apple touchscreen netbook is supposed to be launched in the second half of the year. It will have a 10-inch display from Wintek and Quanta will make it. The interested parties failed to officially comment. Are we to understand from their silence that Apple is indeed launching the new device this year?

Google to Make Its Own Netbook?

What better way to start the week than with rumors about netbooks? Besides an Apple netbook which is said to be in the works, a Google netbook is also rumored.

And it’s all in the words of Google’s CEO Erick Schmidt:

What’s particularly interesting about netbooks is the price point. Eventually, it will make sense for operators and so forth to subsidize the use of netbooks so they can make services revenue and advertising revenue on the consumption. That’s another new model that’s coming.

Are we going to see an Android-based Google netbook soon? Is Google planning to make some extra money off the netbook business? What would you choose between an Apple or a Google netbook?

Apple Netbook to Arrive in Q3?

The Apple netbook has been denied by Steve Jobs and Co. more than once already as such a device didn’t fit with Apple’s view. We’ve had various rumors and leaked images too but Apple has never shown any interest in the netbook market.

That’s why this might be just another rumor. According to the Commercial Times and DigiTimes, Apple will release a netbook in Q3. Wintek is said to supply the thouch-panels while Quanta computer will assemble the netbook. What will it be called? iNetbook? MacBook Mini? We’ll believe it when we see it…

EETI Has Multitouch Capacitive Displays Ready for Netbooks

Multitouch capacitive displays are heading to netbooks and notebooks and we’re anxiously waiting for them. EETI will begin shipping 7- and 12-inch versions in the second half of the year. Psion Claims It Sells the Netbook Pro

Just as we were expecting, Psion is claiming that it’s still going to sell that Netbook Pro. Dell and Intel have both filed requests for the trademark of netbook to be removed from Psion. Psion says that it “can understand why people might have assumed that sales ceased a while back,” but in fact sales are still going on at least in the “highly specialized supply chain logistics area.” Isn’t that convenient? And Psion is ready to prove that. It has “all the invoices to prove multi-million dollar sales in the US in 2006 and sales that continue even to this day.” As a matter of fact they say that “just because we’re not selling tens of thousands through Best Buy doesn’t mean we’re not entitled to our trademark.” Besides Apple vs Psystar trial we’re going to be following this whole new netbook predicament for you too.
