Acer AspireRevo

The “nettop” (short for Internet desktop) is the latest computer gadget that has been on the top of the list among netizens who want to have a fast-performing PC without the clunky space.  A nettop is designed for performing basic computations tasks like surfing the Internet, accessing web-based applications, as well as document processing, media playback among others.  Not only they are lighter and smaller, nettops cost much less and even consume much less power.

Acer has jumped the bandwagon of developing its own nettop and they are proud to present the Acer AspireRevo, which is the first NVDIA ion-powered nettop.  Setting up may require a bit of a know-how especially if you are planning to do a webcast within your wifi connection.  You can also connect the AspireRevo with the a TV and see for yourself the rich images it processes.

The basic purchase of AspireRevo comes with standard equipment like Atom 230 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 250GB 2.5-inch HDD.  The device also comes with pre-installed software that shows off the Ion’s capabilities.  However, some of these software would not function well if the CPU does not have the needed headroom.  It is said that the AspireRevo can be purchased for $299.

While the NVIDIA Ion’s performance may not be impressive, but the slow Atom 230 processor could almost ruins it for everyone else.  Startup is fairly quick, although the time it takes to hit into a “usable” level could have taken a while to build.  The big problem about the Acer AspireRevo, however, is that browsing the Internet through it could cause some damages.  We recommend using Firefox or Chrome as your Internet browser.  A QuickTime movie could be played nicely using PowerDVD.  The best feature, in the meantime, is the video playback.

Acer America launches a new notebook solution in the Acer Aspire Aspire 3935-6504. This new notebook a thin-and-light notebook series which combines distinctive style with cutting-edge technologies, and the Aspire 8935, the next generation in the highly-touted series of large-screen Gemstone notebook PCs.

The full-featured notebook PC is less than one-inch thick and is housed in a rich, golden brown brushed metal chassis that weighs only 4.18 pounds. The first market the Aspire One D250 will likely be available in is Europe, as the system now has its own product page on Acer’s European website. The 10.1-inch netbook was first spotted in February, and passed through the FCC earlier this month. The page reveals official specs for the sub-2.5lb, one-inch thick netbook, which uses Atom N270 or N280 processors and supports 3G broadband. Standard RAM is 2GB, while permanent storage consists of a 160GB hard drive preloaded with Windows XP Home. The display handles resolutions up to 1024×600; other specs include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a multiformat card reader and a 0.3-megapixel webcam, plus three USB 2.0 ports, VGA output, an Ethernet port and audio in/out jacks. The touchpad supports multi-touch inputs, while the keyboard is 89 percent the size of a standard PC’s.

The standard battery is a 2,200mAh three-cell rated at 3.15 hours of life, but can be supplanted by a 4400mAh six-cell unit rated at 6 hours, or a 5200mAh six-cell option capable of 7.5 hours. With the six-cell battery, weight rises to just under 2.8lbs. The D250 should be available in red, blue or black, but despite the product page, pricing and a release date have not been announced.

Internal sources at Acer have reportedly claimed today that the company is planning four systems based on Intel’s CULV platform and could pose a significant threat to Apple. CENS hears that systems will launch as soon as April with 11.6-inch, 13-inch, 14-inch and 15-inch models appearing as part of the early lineup. Their technical details aren’t known, though the 13-inch versions would use magnesium alloys to give them strength without impacting weight.

Although the claim is potentially suspect as it contradicts reports that the affordable ultra low-voltage processors won’t be in notebooks until the summer, it backs claims that Dell, HP and other “large-sized international” computer companies are planning systems of their own that could arrive in May.

Regardless, the systems are already thought to likely dent sales of higher-end ultraportables from companies like Apple and Sony. Intel is known to be targeting systems between $599 and $1,299 with CULV and hopes to give both performance and size between slower, Atom-based netbooks and full-speed notebooks without the traditional $1,500 or higher prices of true ultraportables.

Apple has itself said it has “some ideas” for computers in the netbook class but has resisted their slow speeds and small sizes. It has also publicly resisted offering systems below $500 over quality concerns.

Here is another flashy netbook option for people who want mobile solutions within their grasps. Offered by Acer, the Acer Aspire One AOD150 is not too flashy and not too dull. It has a good number of features, and it also has the best screen we have ever seen in a netbook, so it gets by on much more than just its good looks.

It’s a 10.2in netbook with a fully featured keyboard. The keys are smaller keys than the ones found on the ASUS Eee PC S101, which means that the Acer is not as wide as the Eee PC. This makes it uncomfortable to type on for long periods of time, but eventually you get used to it. Touch-typists will have no problem using the keyboard as it has a regular QWERTY layout and large shift keys on both the left and right sides.

The Acer Aspire One AOD150 differs a little in layout to the 8.9in Aspire One ZG5, but it’s not a complete overhaul of the original design; it still retains much of the original’s look and feel. The touchpad’s left- and right-click buttons are now located at the bottom of the touchpad, rather than either side of it; it has a teardrop-shaped hinge detail, rather than a circle; and it only has one SD slot, rather than two. In the original Linux-based Aspire One, the second SD slot was used to supplement the solid-state drive in the unit.

There is a 160GB, 4200rpm hard drive in the Acer Aspire One AOD150, which is a massive step up from the 8GB solid-state drive found in the original Aspire One. The configuration of the Acer Aspire One AOD150 also includes a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM and Intel GMA950 graphics.

The unit looks great and feels good. It doesn’t get overly warm, so it probably won’t be uncomfortable after long periods of use on your lap. The touchpad feels smooth and is accurate, but we wish there was a physical distinction between the two buttons.

Acer is ready to follow in Apple’s steps with its own app store. Is it really the best thing to invest in? Unless Acer comes up with a totally unique smartphone OS the supposed app store might not have the success Acer wants. And it had to be a cool enough OS to determine developers to make applications for it. Apple and Microsoft have their own app stores. So do Google and RIM. Nokia is working on its OVI store. What do they all have in common? Unique operating systems!

Acer’s senior corporate vice president, Aymar de Lencquesaing, said that Acer “is examining the viability of an app store.” So far Acer will bring us Windows Mobile phones for now although Android handsets are supposed to arrive soon.

The models in question are the entry-level Acer C1 and Acer E1 and they will both come with Windows Mobile 6.5 on board. The phones will arrive in Q3 2009 so by then we should have some hot details about them for you. Stick around!

After this unit was tested and reviewed, Acer informed us that our configuration will not be available. Instead, you can currently get the TravelMate 6293 with a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5870 versus the 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8400, which we tested. Also our tested configuration came with a 250GB, 7,200-rpm hard drive, but Acer is offering only a 160GB, 5,400 hard drive. In mid-January, 2009, the P8400 processor will be available, but the 250GB hard drive will not. The $999 list price applies to the current and upcoming configurations.

Acer may not dominate the boardroom, but maybe it should. The TravelMate 6293, available only for business users (at CDW, www.bestbuybusiness.com, and authorized Acer resellers) for $999 (MSRP), delivers just about everything you could ask for in an ultraportable—and packs in business features to boot.

Acer hasn’t messed too much with its design on this system. It’s basic black, but there’s nothing wrong with that. You will find a bright, 12.1-inch display that handles horizontal viewing angles like a champ. Vertical viewing angles are less forgiving. The full-size keyboard is comfortable, albeit a tad shallow. Some of the right-hand ancillary keys are a little narrow, but touch typists should get along on them just fine.

A Crystal Eye Webcam and dual-array microphone are located along the top of the bezel. The 1.3-megapixel VGA Webcam is optimized for low light, and it worked very well on our tests in dim conditions. We wish the speakers were louder, though—definitely plan on using headphones if you’re going to listen to music or watch movies on this system.

Above the keyboard, you’ll find six buttons that launch password management, a backup utility, NTI Sync (for syncing your data), button configuration, e-mail, and a Web browser. Three status lights are on the left, indicating hard drive status, Num Lock, and Caps Lock.

Around the outside of the system, you’ll find an Ethernet port, two USB ports, and an old-school PC Card slot on the left; Bluetooth and Wi-Fi switches adorn the front, along with mic and headphone jacks and an infrared sensor. On the right is one more USB port, a 5-in-1 memory-card slot, the DVD burner, a modem, and a Kensington lock. We do wish Acer would include an HDMI port, however, for some extra versatility and because they’re so inexpensive to add.

Performance on this $999 machine is impressive. Equipped with a 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 processor, 2GB of RAM, and Intel GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics, it scored 3,263 on Futuremark PCMark Vantage, a level usually reserved for mainstream notebooks or desktop replacements. The same is true with its scores on our Windows Media Encoder test (5 minutes and 25 seconds) and our iTunes test (3 minutes and 57 seconds). We were also blown away by its Cinebench 10 score of 4,653. All these numbers knock the socks off of other ultraportables and even thin-and-lights and some mainstream machines. We just don’t see scores like these for notebooks of this size in this price range.

This ultraportable starts to act like one when it comes to graphics, though the scores are still solid. We saw a healthy 1,037 on Futuremark 3DMark06, which is good for integrated graphics. Most impressive, however, is that all this performance doesn’t come at the expense of battery life. On our demanding DVD rundown test, we saw an impressive 4 hours and 23 minutes of life. And we saw all-day performance under more normal circumstances (working and surfing the Web).

The 6293 also packs a handful of business goodies that put it a notch or two above the competition. For example, the fingerprint reader is paired with Acer’s Bio-Protection, including preboot authentication, ProfileLaunch, FingerLaunch, FingerNav, and password protection. You can also password-protect the BIOS and the hard drive. In addition to 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Acer throws in its Video Conference solution. As an option, you can also add a Bluetooth VoIP phone with Acer PureZone technology.

Overall, Acer’s TravelMate 6293 has a lot to like. Our biggest complaint is that our tested configuration is tough to come by—we had an easier time finding the 6293 with a T5870 processor. Nonetheless, if you’re a business owner or IT manager looking to buy notebooks for your employees or colleagues, we highly recommend the 6293 for its speed, business and security features, and portability.

If you set out to find the largest laptop for the smallest price, your quarry would be Acer Aspire 5735-4624, a 15.6-inch laptop that lists for $499–and currently selling at Best Buy for $399. That price puts it in Netbook range, but the Aspire 5735 is far from a Netbook in dimensions. At roughly 6 pounds, it weighs more than double that of your typical Netbook and features a roomy 15.6-inch screen with a wide 16:9 aspect ratio. The laptop must cut a few corners on its way to a $399 price, of course, and the Aspire 5735 features a flimsy plastic chassis, clacky mouse buttons, and integrated graphics while a Webcam and HDMI port go missing.

The laptop uses an older dual-core Pentium processor, which offers performance on par with a lower-end Core 2 Duo-based laptop such as this Dell Inspiron 1525 or the Gateway T-6836, and decidedly more oomph than you’d get from a single-core Intel Atom chip. It’s hard to be too critical of such a low-cost laptop, particularly one with such an attractive price-performance ratio, but we still say it’s best for movie lovers in need of a basic laptop. It will suffice for general laptop bargain hunters, too, provided they don’t mind toting around an extra-wide laptop and can get used to the offset keyboard and touchpad (thanks to the presence of a number pad) and the keyboard’s slightly cramped dimensions.

The Aspire 5735 is the first 15.6-inch laptop we’ve seen. A standard 15.4-inch laptop features a display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, which means HD content and movies get the letterbox treatment, with black bands at the top and bottom of the screen when viewed at the proper 16:9 ratio (and not stretched to fill the screen). While movies fit nicely on the short but wide display, you’ll find yourself scrolling through Web pages or long Excel documents for the simple fact that there are fewer rows of pixels. The Aspire 5735 features a 1,366×768 native resolution, whereas a 15.4-inch laptop will provide a 1,280×800 resolution or even 1,440×900 resolution. The relatively low resolution on this Aspire makes icons and text large and legible, but you can’t really have two open windows side by side without a lot of overlap.

The display features a glossy screen coating, from which we generally try to steer mainstream buyers away, but it make sense here in such an entertainment-minded system. Movies showed vivid color and smooth movement, though some digital noise was evident in lighter scenes and along edges of objects. The laptop’s stereo speakers emit weak sound; even at max volume, you’ll find yourself hunched over the laptop in order to hear the dialog in a movie.

We’re beginning to see this movie-friendly aspect ratio on 16- and 18-inch models (exhibits A, B, C, and D), and the added width here allows Acer to outfit the Aspire 5735 with a dedicated number pad. Unless you’re an Excel jockey, we question its utility here, since number pads are of most use to gamers, and the Aspire 5735 lacks a dedicated graphics card. The keyboard feels a bit cramped, too, for such a large laptop. The space bar and left Ctrl key have been shortened. There is also a wide gap between the bottom row of keys and the wrist rest, which looks sure to attract dust and dirt and raise the potential of catching the underside of a key and snapping it off. (Disclaimer: This reviewer has two small children, who are surprisingly adept at inflicting damage upon electronics. Their small fingers, in particular, are seemingly well suited to the removal of keys from keyboards.)

The Aspire 5735’s lid is a deep, glossy blue, which presents an upscale look. Open up the laptop, and you’ll find other evidence of its extreme budget status, including a flimsy, plastic chassis. The wrist rest is prone to flex, especially to the left of the touchpad. The mouse buttons are of the loud, clacky variety, and the touchpad and buttons are sunken a bit into the wrist in such a way that it leaves an uncomfortable ridge in front of the mouse buttons. Media transport shortcut keys are absent; you need to employ the Function key and a row of keys below the number pad to play, pause, fast forward, and rewind. Lastly, the two LED indicator lights along glow a very bright green or orange, which may detract from your dark-room movie-viewing experience.

Above the keyboard is a row of four buttons: Wi-Fi on/off, volume up, volume down, and Bluetooth on/off. This model does not include Bluetooth, however. A button in the upper-left corner is marked with an “e” and calls up Acer’s “Empowering Technology,” which is a lofty title for a collection of shortcuts that let you adjust power management settings, view system info, encrypt specific folders or files, create a backup.

The Aspire 5735 offers a basic collection of ports, which should hardly come as a surprise given its bargain-basement price. You won’t find an HDMI port, which is becoming increasingly prevalent on laptops of all size and price. And although the system features Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes the Media Center shell, you won’t find a remote control in the box for that 10-foot interface that Media Center can provide. You will be able to take advantage of the faster throughput and range of Draft N wireless networks; we were pleasantly surprised to find the Aspire 5735 to offer 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi

Among the four entry-level retail laptops we reviewed this month, the Acer Aspire 5735 did well for itself, turning in similar performance as the Dell Inspiron 1525-139B and the Gateway T-6330U–not surprisingly since all three laptops feature the same Pentium Dual Core T3200 processor. The thing is, the Aspire 5735 costs $250 less than these two entry-level laptops. Its price puts it in low-cost Netbook territory, and you can see that it offers clearly superior performance to a single-core Intel Atom-based Netbook like the Asus Eee PC 901. In anecdotal testing, applications loaded quickly and only under heavy multitasking scenarios did we sometimes experience a hiccup. On the whole, we were pleasantly surprised with the Aspire 5735’s performance–its more than acceptable given the low price.

Battery life, too, is more than acceptable. On CNET Labs’ battery drain test, it ran for 2 hours 20 minutes. You can see the benefits of the low-power Atom chip when you look at the Asus Eee PC 901 battery life, but this Netbook has the advantage of a smaller display, a solid-state hard drive, and the efficient Atom CPU, all of which go toward helping battery life.

Full Review

The Acer Aspire 5930G is part of the company’s new Gemstone Blue range of entertainment-focused laptops. There’s more to this machine. It boasts a speedy graphics chip, innovative touch-sensitive media controls and Dolby Home Theatre virtual surround sound. You can buy it for US$1,399 (Rp 12,750,000), but has it really got what it takes to be a top entertainer?

Frankly, yes. The Aspire 5930G really impressed me. It looks great, sounds great and has a good screen. It also offers up muscular performance from both the processor and graphics chip. If you’re on the market for an attractively priced desktop replacement that can take care of your entertainment needs and not consider the bluray (different type of 5930G got the bluray with higher price in Singapore, though), it’s definitely worth serious consideration.

Design

Like its little brother (but better), the Acer Aspire 5920G, the 5930G is certainly an attractive laptop. The lid is finished in glossy piano black and the Acer logo in the center lights up when the laptop is turned on. Open up the laptop and you’ll find a spacious keyboard that’s flanked on the right which touch sensitive dedicated media button.

On the whole there isn’t much to complain about on the 5930G. As i am picky, i’ll complain about the keyboard. The keys are well-spaced, but they feel plasticky compared to many other laptops i’ve used. And sadly, there is no way to turn the light off of the touch sensitive media button. It’s annoying when watching film.

Features

Toshiba has raised the bar somewhat for audio on laptops by opting for Harman Kardon speakers on its entertainment models, but here Acer has added a subwoofer, bottom mounted, and support for Dolby Home Theatre virtual surround sound. As you would expect it never sounds like a true 5.1 surround setup, but the subwoofer does help to add more meat to the bottom end and the spatial effect succeeds in widening the stereo imaging to a pleasing degree.

If you want, you can also use the S/PDIF digital audio output to hook it up to an external surround sound receiver, and the HDMI port also makes it easy to connect the laptop to an HD-ready TV. In fact, connectivity is very good as you get four USB ports 9 including 2 in 1 USB/e Sata port, a VGA monitor connector along with Bluetooth 2.0, Infra red and Draft-N Wi-Fi support. To top all this off there’s also a fingerprint scanner for security and a Webcam and mic at the top of the display for making video calls over the Net.

Performance and Battery Life

It’s pretty handy when it comes to gaming, too, as Acer has used a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT has 512 MB discreet memory and also GDDR3 so it’s 20% faster than DDR2. It’s scored 5.9 on Vista Test Performance.
i think it will not surprising that the laptop would turned in a healthy score of 3DMark06 (i will update the score–>updated). The 9600 chip also has another trick up its sleeve–it features Nvidia’s PureVideo HD technology that offers hardware decoding of HD video.

I have a SiSoftware Benchmark result for “processor multimedia”, it show how your processor handle multimedia instruction and data, both 5930G and 5920G. It says 5930G = 155284 iit/s and 5920G = 119355 iit/s. 5930G has better value than 5920G by 23%.

I already run the test for battery life. I get 3 hour and 15 minute on high performance setting when doing work using MS WORD and listening music (half volume) with windows media player. For me, it’s amazing. The new Centrino 2 technology, it’s surely increasing battery performance.

Acer has announced the TravelMate 7730 a professional notebook for business users looking for “multitasking efficiency, enhanced productivity and solid wireless connectivity”.

Verdict: Blu-ray, an 18.4in display and built-in 5.1 speakers set the 8920G apart from the desktop replacement crowd.

After teasing our curiosity over the past couple of weeks, Acer has finally revealed its new range of Blu-ray equipped Aspire Gemstone laptops. The UK launch was a pretty understated affair, and perhaps suitably so, with the restrained styling of the Gemstone Blue range contrasting wonderfully with the gaudy modernity of the Soho Hotel. We managed to prise a pre-production Aspire 8920G from Acer’s grasp to give it an exclusive first look.

Visually, the new laptops might not mark any radical departures from the norm, but that’s no bad thing. And thankfully there’s no sign of the Acer Aspire 5920’s beige interior making a resurgence either. Instead, Acer has stuck to classic design cues. The black glossy lids shimmer with a subtle glitter effect, and the Acer logo glows attractively in the centre.

Build quality is reasonable too. Both the base and lid exhibit noticeable flex when you really tug at them, but given the Aspire 8920G’s proportions, it’s none too surprising.

Open up the sizable lid and the eye is immediately drawn to the glowing block of touch-sensitive media playback buttons situated at the keyboard’s left-hand edge. Acer has dubbed this the CineDash but, marketing buzzwords aside, it simply saves fiddling with the trackpad or keyboard when you just want to pause a video or quickly adjust the volume.

When we say sizable, we really mean huge, as the 8920G can lay claim to being the first laptop available with an 18.4in display. With all but the most gargantuan of laptops settling for 17in displays – Dell’s briefcase-sized XPS M2010 being one obvious exception to the rule – you might wonder why Acer has super-sized this aspect of the 8920G. One thing is for sure: the sheer size and thigh-crushing 4.17kg weight certainly put paid to any crazy ideas you might have about enjoying Blu-ray movies on the daily commute.

The 8920G’s large footprint does have its advantages though. There’s plenty of room for the CineDash, a full-sized keyboard and a numeric keypad. It’s just a shame the keyboard is nothing special. We have no quibbles with the layout, but the keys themselves have a spongy, slightly indistinct action which isn’t ideal for long stretches of typing. One of our pet hates, a half-height Enter key, proved to be an aggravation too.

But, this is a laptop with its eye firmly set on home entertainment, not portability or productivity. To this end, Acer hasn’t just made the display bigger, it’s also adopted a panel with a movie-friendly 16:9 ratio. Traditional PC displays use a 16:10 ratio which, for movies, makes the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen rather obtrusive. Not so the 8920G, which, thanks to a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, is effortlessly capable of displaying 1080p Blu-ray movies in all their high-definition glory.

Well, most of their glory anyway. The 8920G’s display is amply bright thanks to dual backlights, and colours are rich and vibrant but, crucially, it lacks fine detail compared to the very best 1080p displays we’ve seen. Still, for a laptop display it’s pretty impressive. Horizontal viewing angles are fantastically wide and, when you’re not watching movies, the huge Windows desktop gives plenty of room to work with multiple programs.

The large size of the screen means you can comfortably watch movies at a distance, and by adding a TV tuner (something which is included with more expensive models), it would make a relatively portable Media Center laptop.

A word to the wise though, move more than a metre or two away and, even if you are blessed with 20/20 vision, the human eye will struggle to tell the difference between high-definition and standard-definition movie material. If you want to get all the benefits of HD in a lounge, you’ll just have to use the 8920G’s HDMI port to connect to a substantially larger HDTV or projector.

Even on its own, watching movies on the Aspire 8920G is still a sensible proposition. Unlike many laptops, which make do with a couple of tinny built-in speakers, the Acer crams in five and a subwoofer. There’s no real sense of surround-sound per se, but the multiple speakers manage to create a far more involving spread of sound than most laptops we’ve encountered. The only real problem is volume; music fares alright, but the huge dynamic swings in movie audio often reduced speech to a barely audible murmur. An option to crush the dynamic range of movie soundtracks would be a welcome one.

The pre-production nature of our unit means that retail models dropping off the production line will have some notable differences in specification. Nonetheless, the 8920G we tested bore quite a few important similarities to the mid-range specification, which will come in at £936.

The processor in question is one of the new Penryn-based Intel Core 2 Duos, the T8300 to be precise. And thanks to its two cores running at 2.4GHz and 3GB of RAM backing them up, the 8920G flew through the Pro benchmarks with a mighty result of 1.26. As the memory complement will swell to 4GB when the 8920G finally hits the market, performance may improve further. Storage will eventually comprise of a single 320GB hard disk, and a Blu-ray writer which writes to both single and double layer Blu-ray media, in addition to every type of DVD media.

Unfortunately we couldn’t test the 8920G’s graphical capabilities as it had an Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT on-board rather than the new mid-range chipset, the GeForce 9500M GS production units will eventually ship with. Going by its performance in Asus’s M50SV-AS030G, though, its primary purpose will be for helping to decode Blu-ray video streams, not high resolution gaming. If that’s important to you, then you’ll just have to opt for one of the pricier configurations equipped with the GeForce 9650M GS instead.

What Acer’s Aspire 8920G does offer, however, is a hell of a lot of laptop for a very reasonable price. We’ll have to reserve final judgment until one of the final retail units arrive but, going by what we’ve seen so far, we can’t wait.

When we looked at Acer’s first Ferrari-themed ultraportable, the Ferrari 1000, we liked its car-themed style and strong performance, but were disappointed by its mediocre battery life. We opened the box of its successor, the Ferrari 1100, with some anticipation–this is, after all, a well-designed, full-featured ultraportable laptop that ought to impress. But alas: Despite its strong components, the Ferrari 1100 posted mixed performance scores and less-than-stellar battery life. Though we’re thrilled that Acer has managed to squeeze a DVD burner into the Ferrari’s compact and solidly constructed case, we’re not convinced that anyone but the most fanatical sports-car enthusiasts will be thrilled to spend $1,800 on the Ferrari 1100. Most people will be better served by the Lenovo 3000 V200 or even Acer’s TravelMate 6292.

It’s no MacBook Air, but the Acer Ferrari 1100 is an astonishingly compact laptop, with a footprint that’s just a bit larger than a piece of paper. However, the wow factor diminishes when you pick it up: At 4.4 pounds, the Ferrari 1100 veers into the territory of a thin-and-light laptop. However, it’s about the same weight as other bulky ultraportables, such as the Lenovo 3000 V200. As you might expect from a heavier-than-average ultraportable, the Ferrari 1100 feels solid and able to stand up to the bumps and knocks of frequent travel.

The Ferrari 1100 includes a 12.1-inch wide-screen display with a native resolution of 1,280×800. While that sharpness occasionally results in text that’s too small to read, we found it workable for everyday word processing and Web surfing. Mobile workers looking for a flashy productivity tool probably won’t like the screen’s glossy coating. The coating resulted in some reflections in our office environment. Unfortunately there is not an option for a display with a matte finish. But home users who want a highly portable media machine will likely enjoy watching movies on the Ferrari 1100. Above the display sits a 1.3-megapixel Webcam with a single microphone for Web videoconferencing.

Like most ultraportables, the Acer Ferrari 1100’s tiny case requires a compact keyboard. But we were surprised to find that typing for extended periods was easy, perhaps in part because the keys are slightly separated from each other and have a satisfying spring. The touch pad is likewise compact, but it has a textured surface, which provides enough drag to make the small area usable. The groovy metallic mouse buttons, engraved with “Ferrari 1100,” have been placed right below the touch pad (an improvement over previous Ferrari models). Above the keyboard are three glowing light-touch keys, next to a Ferrari logo, all of which disappear when the laptop is powered down. On the upper left corner are a large power button and a smaller button that launches Acer’s custom setup and configuration software. With the exception of the power button, all the keys above the keyboard can be programmed to launch any application. Below the keyboard is a fingerprint reader that lets you log on to Windows and frequently used Web sites with the swipe of a finger.

The Acer Ferrari 1100’s case is a little larger than most ultraportables. The size helps accommodate the ports and connections you would expect to find on a larger thin-and-light laptop. For example, it’s the rare ultraportable that incorporates both S/PDIF and audio line-out jacks. The laptop’s Dolby “virtual surround” sound doesn’t do much for sound quality; though well-balanced, music and movies still sound thin. We were pleased, however, by the laptop’s slot-loading DVD burner, which maintains the sleek case design and is easier to use in cramped spaces, such as airplane tray tables. As with other Ferrari models, Acer throws in a Ferrari-branded mouse and a tiny, coordinating Bluetooth VoIP phone.

Currently you can buy only one configuration of the Acer Ferrari 1100, the Ferrari 1100-5457, for $1,800. The configuration includes a 2.3GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-66 dual-core processor, an impressive 4GB of 667MHz RAM, and ATI Radeon X1270 graphics. That extra RAM greatly helped the Ferrari 1100 on the Photoshop portion of CNET Labs’ benchmarks, where it outran a field of competitors that included the similarly configured HP Pavilion tx2000 and Acer’s non-Ferrari ultraportable, the TravelMate 6292. The Ferrari 1100 fared less well, however, on the Multimedia multitasking test. It trailed significantly behind the competition. We blame the processor; in general, we’ve found AMD Turion 64 X2 processors do not perform as well as than Intel Core 2 Duo processors when it comes to multitasking. That’s not to say the Ferrari 1100 is a dog; we were able to listen to music and jump back and forth between multiple applications without any significant lag time. Without a better showing on CNET Labs’ benchmarks, its hard to recommend the Ferrari 1100 over less expensive alternatives like Lenovo’s bulky ultraportable, the 3000 V200, or Acer’s admittedly less stylish TravelMate 6292.

We weren’t impressed by the Ferrari 1100’s battery life. The laptop lasted just over 2 hours on our DVD battery drain test–quite a bit less than both the Pavilion tx2000 and the TravelMate 6292 (which incorporates an Intel Core 2 Duo processor). Our DVD battery drain test is particularly taxing, so you can expect a slightly longer battery life during typical use; still, we would expect more from an ultraportable that’s presumably designed for frequent use away from your desk.

Acer backs the Ferrari 1100 with a one-year warranty, which is standard for consumer laptops. Acer’s technical support phone lines are open only Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT and on weekends from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. PT. The company’s online support could stand some sprucing up. Though it does offer easy driver and manual downloads, it lacks such helpful features as forums and real-time chat with a tech-support representative.

This model features great battery life (110 minutes in a worst-case-scenario) that can be tailored using Acer’s ePowerManagement software. It’s quite light at just 3kg and it has cutting-edge specifications such as the 2GHz Pentium M processor.

The 8006LMi also features 512MB of 333MHz PC2700 DDR SDRAM, a sizeable 80GB 5400rpm hard disk (with under-chassis shock protection), modular (hot swappable) multiformat DVD writer and a 128MB DDR ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics controller providing a maximum resolution of 1400 x 1050 on the 15″ display.

The 8006LMi has flexible networking options including built-in 56K modem and Gigabit Ethernet connections. Activation and status buttons are located on the front fascia for Bluetooth and certified 802.11b/g wireless networking and Acer claims its SignalUp antenna technology improves connection reliability.

Ports include VGA-out and DVI connections for external monitors in addition to S-Video TV-out, FireWire and four USB 2.0 slots. There’s also a multiformat card reader integrated into the front fascia and support is provided for one Type II/I PC Card, an optional EasyPort Replicator III dock and an Acer SmartCard. Acer’s SmartCards are made of plastic, are about the size of a credit card and contain a computer chip. One card is bundled to help you keep up security by limiting access to all sorts of areas from system startup (at the BIOS level) to file encryption.

To Acer’s credit, the 8006LMi’s warranty has been upgraded to three years (Acer offers only one year on most models). You also get two-hour express turnaround.

This is a review on the TravelMate 6492, which is designed and made by the manufacturer acer.

Acer as a respectable company are growing in popularity, and even though they may be quite away from matching rivals dell, they are still now just as well known as some other lower named laptop companies out there.
This laptop features an Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 / 2 Ghz processor, this is very fast and runs the huge 2 gb of ram installed superbly. For anyone looking for a quick laptop then look no further because you will struggle to find a laptop much quicker than this.

Another thing about this is that, even if that 2gb of ram wasn’t fast enough for you, (even though it will be fast enough for nearly anyone) then you can upgrade the ram to a massive 4 gb. This can be costly however its great to have this possibility because if you think its too slow you wont have to get a new faster laptop, and can instead just upgrade the ram to increase the laptops performance.
This laptops great specs hasn’t just stopped at the huge amount of ram. Its also got a big hard drive too, with a huge 160 gb hard drive you will be able to store all your pictures, movies, music and well anything else you can can think of to store on this huge hard disk space.

The only bad thing I can think of about this laptop is its screen size. However this could be looked at in two different ways. For me, because I usually have 17 inch screened laptops, this 14.1 inch screen seems a little small, especially when viewing web videos or watching movies and videos on mi laptop.
However, the other view on this laptop could be that this 14.1 inch screen (which by the way is great quality and ultra sharp) makes the laptop ultra portable and you can see this by the fact it only weighs 2. Kg. so for all you people who want something portable and very fast this could be for you.
Now, iv always thought the design of the travelmate is a bit boring, after all it is made for business men and is meant to look business like. However this acer isn’t really that bad. Its all black in colour, and I think it could have looked two times better if it was two toned black and sliver however it is quite sleek and even though it could look better, acer have done a good job with the design.

But what I really like about this laptop, is its extra features. You can see just by looking at it, its great built in webcam. These make video chat so much easier as it means you don’t have to set up a webcam, you don’t have to worry about wires and best of all you don’t have to worry about always being in the picture.
This laptop also contains a 5 in 1 card reader which reads any of: SD Memory Card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, MultiMediaCard, xD-Picture Card. These are great as they just make transferring pictures from your digital cameras so much easier as you don’t have to worry about finding cables and about battery life on your camera.

This laptop is for anyone who has a lot of work to do, but little time to do it in, its for anyone who is impatient in waiting one second more than they have to for things to load. Its also for anyone who wants something ultra portable with great built in features too.

Acer TravelMate 7720 is the powerhouse of the TravelMate model line. This 17.0” notebook comes with a few choices, such as integrated or discrete graphics through the Mobile Inter PM965/GM 965 Express chipset. 3GB are installed for memory, but with the two memory slots it can be upgraded to 7GB. Offered is the Discrete ATI Mobility Radeom HD 2400 XT graphics card, not available to most in the TravelMate line. For communication convenience, Acer Video Conference including an integrated Acer Crystal Eye webcam is provided. A wireless connection is established via Pro/Wireless 3945ABG, or Wireless WiFi Link 4965ABG, both supported with Acer SignalUp Technology. TravelMate 7720 has an eight-cell lithium battery with up to 4.5 hours of operation, and can charge to 80% in 1.0 hour.

Verdict: It’s no ultraportable, but HD DVD and 320GB of hard disk space are a real highlight at this price.

The HD bandwagon trundling through the consumer electronics arena is taking a while to affect the PC market. With a lack of clarity on which of the competing next-gen formats to choose, high prices and a less than compelling argument for HD on sub-20in screens, it’s hardly surprising.

But the notebook market is proving a little more open to HD’s charms, thanks no doubt to their portable entertainment skills. And it helps that Toshiba the creator of HD DVD and principal manufacturer of drives is being particularly aggressive on price. The result is this Acer: the cheapest HD disc notebook we’ve seen yet; sporting one of Toshiba’s DVD drives, but costing comfortably less than £700.

That doesn’t mean the rest of the components have suffered a major downgrade. The Core 2 Duo 7300 helped push it to 1.00 in our benchmarks, and 2GB of RAM means you can run even memory-intensive applications side by side without the supplied Windows Vista Home Premium stuttering.

Hard disk space, traditionally a little limited in notebooks, is even more impressive. The 320GB split across two hard disks (and, strangely, three partitions) provides ample storage for use as your main PC or video repository. For external storage, the HD DVD portion of the drive is read-only, but it will happily write to all formats of blank CD and DVD, including dual-layer.

The 17in screen has a reasonable 1,440 x 900 pixel resolution. It won’t display 1080p HD video in its entirety, but you won’t notice on a panel this small. It stands up well to scrutiny, too, with a good level of detail only occasionally spoilt by the all-too-reflective glossy coating. Sat close up, both standard DVDs and HD DVDs look great, and the panel is evenly bright, with decent viewing angles.

To make the most of the drive, though, you’ll need to hook it up to a decent external display or an HDTV. The DVI-D output isn’t ideal for this HDMI would be less cumbersome and also carry sound but the use of a DVI-HDMI adapter isn’t a big strain.

The built-in speakers also do an adequate job for casual film watching; they become impressively loud before distorting, and there’s a small subwoofer on the bottom of the chassis, giving an extra kick to the low-end. For more serious integration with a home-entertainment setup, the headphone jack doubles up as an optical digital out.

Acer also attempts to offer gaming performance, courtesy of Nvidia’s GeForce 8400M GS graphics. It isn’t up to the latest games – it only managed 17fps in Call of Duty 2 even at our lowest settings – but will cope with older titles. The GeForce card helps with HD playback, too.

As an unrepentant desktop-replacement notebook, we’re not too concerned about the Acer’s 3.5kg weight or rather lacklustre battery life around two hours of light use. It looks better than many of its big-boned brethren, too, from the outside at least. We like the glossy black finish to the lid, although the grey plastic interior does give away its budget origins. The 7720G also makes no attempt to be svelte, with a big bezel and generously sized keyboard and number pad. Unfortunately, this means the main keyboard is set off-centre. The keyboard is also slightly spongy; pushing hard on a key causes its neighbours to flex towards your finger. However, it’s comfortable to use and well laid-out, while the smooth and accurate trackpad is slightly wider than normal to match the widescreen.

The Acer boasts a built-in 0.3-megapixel webcam and a range of expansion options, with four USB ports, a 5-in-1 card reader and an ExpressCard/54 slot allowing you to connect a wide range of external peripherals. You may, in the future, want to add an 802.11n adapter to complement the built-in 802.11abg.

The Acer is slower and has a lower resolution screen than our A-Listed desktop replacement, the Rock Xtreme 770-T7700 (web ID: 137121), but it costs half as much and adds HD disc playback. To cram all the Aspire’s other features into a machine that costs so little is an impressive achievement – it’s simply great for the price.
