Bridgestone Delivers Color E-paper Display

Bridgestone has been working on a new electronic paper display technology and it has delivered it. Besides all that color the new e-paper has one more useful feature, support for pen input. That’s right, you will be able to use a pen and play with it as much as you want.

The display itself is made from the Bridgestone QR-LPD electronic powder, the Wacom electromagnetic induction tablet and a color filter. Its refresh speed is what makes pen input possible. The refresh rate is 0.8 seconds compared to 15 seconds on the previous model. The device is not available yet and there’s no price for it yet. You know how it works…

ViewSonic launches 22-inch, 1080p LCD TV

ViewSonic on Wednesday announced the release of its VT2230 LCD TV, which offers 16:9 resolutions up to 1080p, on a panel measuring 22 inches. The display is meant for use in locations where a larger set would not physically fit, such as kitchens, dens or small bedrooms. The TV achieves a 5ms response time, with 300cd/m2 brightness. Other specs include a 8,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio (1,000:1 static), and integrated tuners for ATSC, NTSC and QAM broadcasts. A single HDMI connection is provided, but also present are VGA, component, S-Video and composite inputs. The VT2230 is currently selling for $349.

Sony Blu-ray recorders export TV to Walkman, PSP

Sony Japan has recently announced the upcoming release of a pair of Blu-ray Disc recorders, the 500GB BDZ-A950 and 320GB BDZ-A750. Both support the acTVila video delivery service for digital TVs in Japan, and have the ability to export recorded or downloaded content onto Sony’s portable multimedia devices, including the PSP gaming console and Walkman devices. As well, Sony says content recorded from analog broadcasts or other that does not contain copy protection signals can be sent to cellphones. The Internet-based acTVila service offers a Video Download service that lets users buy and keep recordings, the acTVila Video Full video streaming service for real-time viewing and acTVila Video Download Rental that lets users watch content for a limited time.

Two built-in terrestrial digital and analog tuners, BS digital and 110° CS, respectively, allow users to record one program while watching another and provide them with a number of recording options.

A built-in program guide allows searching for programs by entering keywords such as actor names or performers. Ethernet lets users access the content on the drives from other rooms via a compatible PC or TV that is compatible with the Sony Room Link. BRAVIA Link support means one remote can control both the Sony TV and the Blu-ray recorder.

The pair of BDZ-series recorders will launch in Japan on April 24th, with unofficial prices set at the equivalent of about $1,757 for the 500GB model and $1,450 for the 320GB model.

Fujitsu FLEPia eBook Reader

You may have heard of Amazon’s Kindle eBook reader that has amazed some people with its innovative way of reading electronic books, but has left others unimpressed because of its clunky operation and grayscale display. Recently, Fujitsu has announced that it will release its version of an eBook reader that made some techies jump for joy. For one, it displays color.

The Fujitsu FLEPia is an eBook reader that contains an 8-inch, 1024 x 768 XGA touchscreen that can display up to 260,000 colors. It also features Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, an SD card slot that can store up to 4GB of memory, and a 40-hour battery life. The FLEPia displays PDF, TXT, HTML, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, XMDF eBook formats, and virtually all image formats in color. This eBook reader also has stereo speakers, a USB 2.0 port, and can even load Windows CE 5.0.

The FLEPia has been a project of Fujitsu for the past two years, when they introduced the world’s first film substrate-based bendable color electronic paper with image memory function. It will be initially available in Japan, but techies from other countries can pre-order it online on Fujitsu’s website and will be shipped beginning April 20, 2009. The price? About US$1000.

Lenovo Issues Recall on ThinkVision Speaker AC Adaptors

Due to a potential shock hazard, Lenovo has been forced to announce a recall on its ThinkVision Speakers AC Adaptor. The plastic shell of the AC Adaptor can crack, posing a risk of electric shock to consumers.

Lenovo sold the AC Adaptors as part of the ThinkVision Soundbar option. The FRU part number 89P8571 with date code 200810 is located on the back of the adaptor.

Lenovo’s Web sites, telephone and direct sales, and Lenovo authorized distributors nationwide from October 2008 through January 2009, as an accessory for about $30. Consumers should stop using the recalled AC Adaptor and contact Lenovo to receive a free replacement part.

Thinkware announces iNAVI K3 3D navigation device

Koreans now have yet another option to choose from if they are in the market for an in-car navigation unit. Landing in the low-end category of Thinkware’s 3D navigation devices, the iNAVI K3 provides all pertinent information in a 3D environment on its big 7-inch WVGA display at 800×480 resolution. The screen can also turn into a portable TV as the iNAVI K3 has DMB receiver onboard or function as a video player for videos loaded on to a SDHC memory card of up to 8GB in size. A SirF V6 chip boosts its navigation capabilities and it is aided by InstantFixII reducing the amount of time needed to lock on to satellites. Also included are an mp3 player, a car diary, and a game for the kids on their ride to school.

No information on a release date yet but, as with most other Korean devices, this will be a South Korea only affair going for a price of 399,000 KRW (about $300).

Mintpass Touchscreen Media, Web Pad to Reach US?

Relative fledgling company mintpass has revealed that it intends to launch its mintpad mini tablet outside of its native Korea, potentially including the US. The device centers on a nearly 2.9-inch touchscreen and is unique outside of Apple devices in focusing as much on its Internet features as on media playback. Likely using a Wi-Fi connection, it can not only browse the web with full Adobe Flash but also has a heavy community component with blogging and IM among its features. Streaming Internet video is equally an option. Offline, the mintpad also has a calendar, contacts and memos along with a camera for taking photos or video. Its music support involves rarer formats like APE, FLAC and OGG alongside MP3, WAV and WMA; videos include the more exotic DivX and XviD as well as MPEG-4 and WMV. Owners can also record audio in WMA.Exactly when the Windows CE-based handheld will ship to other countries hasn’t been specified. However, mintpass hopes to have completed translating the interface and documentation to English by late April or early May and could clear the mintpad shortly afterwards. Koreans currently pay the equivalent of $143.

Pioneer Intros Last Plasmas Before May Exit From TVs

Pioneer more formally bowed out of TVs today by launching four final Kuro models in Japan and setting out formal plans for its exit strategy. The external-tuner-equipped KRP-500A and KRP-600A as well as their all-in-one equivalents, the KRP-500M and KRP-600M, all produce 1080p images at 50 and 60 inches respectively. Although their contrast ratios aren’t mentioned, they all have four HDMI inputs with support for deep color, support media from a USB port and have input over D4 (component) as well as VGA. All four should be available on April 1st at open prices on the Japanese market. It’s unlikely that the sets will be available elsewhere as they are expected to ship in relatively small numbers.

Following the launch, Pioneer now says it intends to halt all TV production in May and will clear TVs out of the market shortly afterward. It will continue to provide repairs on sets for the next 8 years and hopes to still offer replacement parts as long as supplies last after that period.

The company had revealed that it would quit the TV business last month after existing losses in the division were compounded by the world economic crisis, which forced the move as Pioneer sought to cut costs and protect its core home theater and audio lines.
