Sanyo ships hybrid still/video camcorders

Sanyo on Thursday said it had started shipping its combination photo and video Dual Camera Xacti line. The series is headlined by the FH1 and HD2000, which can both shoot 1080p video in H.264 while capturing 8-megapixel photos, carry 10X lenses, and both slow motion video as well as burst photo modes that take advantage of large memory buffers. The CA9 and WH1 (pictured) capture movies in 720p but are waterproof and snap 9-megapixel still shots, while the CG10 and TH1 have the same video resolution but 8-megapixel stills and either an extra-small (CG10) or horizontal (TH1) form factor. All the devices support modern video editing tools like iMovie and sync over USB. Sony debuts titanium TG5V Handycam with GPS

Sony has debuted a new high-definition camcorder, the HDR-TG5V, that is designed for travelers requiring lightweight gear. The Handycam features a Carl Zeiss lens, with 10X optical zoom, and captures 1920 by 1080 pixel video and four-megapixel still images. A titanium body and compact form factor contribute to the low weight. An integrated GPS antenna and NAVTEQ maps can be used to automatically geo-tag videos or images to keep a record of the exact shooting location. The geo-tagged content carries a push-pin reference marker for each location. A map index is available from the 2.7-inch LCD touchscreen, or users can access the geographic data from the included Picture Motion Browser software. Six hours of HD footage can be stored on 16GB of embedded memory, while recording time can be extended with a Memory Stick PRO Duo.

The camcorder also features Smile Shutter technology that is designed to snap a still photo when the subject smiles, even while recording video. The system also employs facial recognition algorithms that are claimed to automatically adjust focus, exposure and color control.

The HDR-TG5V should ship in May for an estimated price of $1000. Sony will also offer a travel kit with an extra battery, travel charger and a pouch for around $100. Customers can also add a wide angle lens for $100.

Olympus premieres entry-level E-450 DSLR

Camera builder Olympus has announced the E-450, its newest entry-level DSLR. The camera is a replacement for the earlier E-420, and sports a 10-megapixel sensor, combined with a TruePic III+ image processor. Light sensitivity ranges only from ISO 100 to 1600, while shooting speed is limited to 3.5fps, supplemented by a buffer capable of holding just eight RAW images; the camera does however benefit from an improved Live View mode, with contrast and phase difference detection autofocus. The mode has also been given face detection and shadow compensation abilities. The camera further introduces three “art” filters, labelled Pop Art, Soft Focus and Pin Hole; all settings are previewed on a 2.7-inch LCD before shooting. Other notable features of the camera include a dust-removal motor, support for CF and xD cards, and wireless external flash sync with up to three different groups. The E-450 will ship beginning in May, in the form of three different kits. Aside from a body-only option, a basic kit will include a Zuiko 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, while the Double Zoom kit will add a second, 40-150mm f/4.0-5.6 lens. Prices are so far unpublished.

All you have to do is to press the big red button on the center to record, and then press it again to stop. Flip the USB arm on its side and plug it directly to the computer. However, not everybody has a very accessible USB port, which prompted the manufacturers to provide a USB extension cord, which is only available online.

What stepped this product further is that Flip Ultra has an improved uploading process and even has built-in editing software. It also has a much simpler navigation between keys as you can now zoom in to your video subjects up to 2x with digital zoom, as well as a trashcan button that deletes your videos. However, its limited memory does not seem to be expandable, which is why you need to archive your footage on your PC before the videos become unfit for viewing.

The built-in editing software can let you transfer video clips from the Flip Ultra to your computer hard drive, which you can then edit, burn into DVD, e-mail, or upload to online video sharing sites. The Flip Ultra makes it simple for many consumers who are still afraid of new technologies. It is one of the most inexpensive camcorders in the market, and you can expect Pure Digital to come up with more advanced models in the near future.

Avaak Vue Personal Video Network

With the rising incidence of criminal activities, more and more people are availing of home security surveillance systems. However, most of these systems are difficult to install and to set-up, have very complicated features, and a tag price that puts off budget consumers. Now Avaak has unveiled the Vue Personal Video Network, a simple and economical home security system.

One major highlight of the Vue is that it offers multiple cameras and a base station without the annoying wires, which allow you to view feeds online. Each room video monitoring is powered by a lithium CR123 battery, rated at one million pictures or about 10 minutes of video daily for a year before the power expires. You will not hear any sound, but the cameras film in VGA at 10 frames every second with a 640 x 480 resolution.

The Vue Personal Video Network uses FrameMesh, a 2.4GHz network that links to either a base station or an extra camera as far as 50 feet away. The cameras themselves do not stick to the wall. For each camera, you need a magnetic mount that you can either screw or stick to the wall. This makes it a lot easier to move the camera around.

The absence of motion sensor is the major drawback of this home security system. Unfortunately, you are stuck checking stuff out whenever you think that something might be wrong. The Vue Personal Video Network with two cameras is priced at $299 and extra cameras cost $99.

Canon PowerShot SD850 IS

Canon’s SD series, also known as the Digital Elph line, is an exercise in slow evolution. Since the company has hit on a very successful design, these compact point-and-shoots typically see only minor tweaks from year to year. This year’s follow-up to the popular SD700 IS is the new PowerShot SD850 IS. The main differences between the two include a jump up to 8.3 megapixels (from 6.2 megapixels) and the new Digic III image processor, which brings with it face detection and a higher top sensitivity of ISO 1,600 (up from ISO 800). The SD850 sports nearly everything you’d want in a point-and-shoot.

The only thing you might want to change would be the 4x optical zoom lens. The SD850 IS’s lens starts at an equivalent of 35mm and ends at 140mm. For a compact camera such as this, I prefer a lens that starts wider, such as the 28mm-to-105mm lens found on the PowerShot SD800 IS. The wider lens lets you fit more people into those group photos, or get closer to your subject, such as in a nightclub. Of course, we can’t really hold this against Canon in this case, since the SD800 IS basically offers everything the SD850 IS does, but with a different lens. So if you side with me in the lens debate, check out the SD800 IS. Both cameras include Canon’s very effective optical image stabilization to help keep your images sharp even if your hands aren’t very steady.

Designwise, the SD850 IS is almost identical to the SD700 IS. The only real difference is the colors that adorn its body. That means that Canon hasn’t fixed the wacky on/off button that irked us on last year’s model. It sits to the right of the tiny viewfinder above the 2.5-inch LCD screen on the camera back. The button is in an awkward place and is also rather small and completely flush with the camera back. We’ve never had much of a problem with positioning the power button atop the camera and aren’t sure why Canon decided to put it here in the first place. Maybe they’ll move it next year. We also found that the mode dial, embedded into the right side, felt a bit flimsy and occasionally skipped a couple of notches when we were trying to move only one. Once we got used to it, though, it wasn’t much of a problem.

Compared to last year’s multicontroller pad, which was perfectly fine, the SD850 IS’s pad is an improvement. A raised ring around the pad gives it better tactile response. Plus, when you rest your thumb in any particular direction, a graphic appears on the LCD to show you what you’d do if you press fully. This came in handy, since you don’t have to move your eyes away from the screen when changing settings. Plus, it makes it easier to discern the controller’s multiple functions, since the onscreen graphic only shows the function that is active in the mode you’re currently using.

For the most part, the PowerShot SD850 IS turned in a performance that is equal to, or faster than, that of the SD700 IS, despite the increase in megapixels. The SD850 IS took 1.2 seconds to start up and capture its first JPEG. Subsequent JPEGs took 1.7 seconds between shots without flash but slowed significantly to 3 seconds between shots with the flash turned on. This is one area where the SD700 IS outperformed; it took 1.9 seconds between shots with its flash enabled. The SD850 IS’s shutter lag measured 0.5 second in our high-contrast test and 0.7 second in our low-contrast test, which mimic bright and dim shooting conditions, respectively. The other area where the SD850 IS lags behind its predecessor is continuous shooting. The SD850 IS yielded about 1.4 frames per second (fps) regardless of image size, while the SD750 IS was able to churn out a more impressive 2.1fps.

Images from the SD850 IS are very impressive. Colors look accurate, there’s plenty of sharpness, especially for a compact camera, and at its lowest ISO settings, we saw no appreciable noise. In fact, noise doesn’t even begin to encroach until you reach ISO 200. Even then, it’s just a very light covering of off-color splotches that’s barely visible on computer monitors and won’t show up at all in prints. Noise remains similar at ISO 400, with a just-perceptible increase that still won’t mar your prints much, if at all. At ISO 800, noise becomes more pronounced, robbing some finer image detail, and adding filmlike grain to prints. Surprisingly, while darker colors become washed out at this point, there’s still a fair amount of shadow detail. At its highest sensitivity setting of ISO 1,600, most finer detail is obliterated by noise, and lots of shadow detail is lost. Rather than a fine grain, the noise becomes larger and causes a nasty blotchy look overall. We recommend staying below ISO 1,600 if you plan on making prints and below ISO 800 if you plan to make prints larger than 8×10 inches.

There’s very little to complain about on the SD850 IS. Fans of ultracompacts, such as Sony’s T-series, might complain that this Canon isn’t small enough, but given its excellent image quality and speedy performance, I’m not complaining. Also, unlike those Sony cameras, this one includes an optical viewfinder, for situations, such as concerts, in which an LCD might annoy those around you. Bargain hunters will likely balk at this camera’s price, but again, its features and performance make it worth the premium over a bargain-basement camera.
