Kingston’s USB DataTraveler now Mac compatible

Computer memory maker Kingston has introduced a Mac OS X-compatible version of its DataTraveler Vault — Privacy Edition (DTVP) USB flash drive on Monday. The drive is labeled ultra-secure thanks to 256-Bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) hardware encrypted, and will lock down after 10 unsuccessful logins, requiring a reformat to be usable again. All DTVP drives are made of aluminum and waterproof in depths of up to 4 feet. The drives can read data at up to 24MBps and write it at 10MBps. Compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and later, the DTVP flash storage is available in 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB capacities, with respective pricing set at $110, $177, $308, $502 and $910.

Hynix readies fast, 1Gb smartphone memory

Hynix today revealed that it has produced the first 1-gigabit (256MB) mobile DDR2 memory based on a 54 nanometer manufacturing process. Shrinking the chip design has let the company simultaneously raise its maximum clock speed up to 1,066MHz — the same as desktop memory — but also to drastically reduce the power versus earlier mobile RAM. The denser memory consumes about half as much power as earlier mobile DDR2 and just 30 percent that of full-fledged desktop memory. The firm pitches the technology as particularly useful for high-end smartphones but also for those mobile Internet devices and netbooks that need a high amount of bandwidth (up to 8.5GB per second with dual memory channels) but still need to keep energy use in check.

Hynix doesn’t name its clients but does say it expects to start shipping memory in the second half of the year.

Toshiba ships 32nm, 32GB flash memory early

Toshiba on Monday revealed that it has started shipping its 32 nanometer NAND flash memory ahead of schedule. Originally planned for the fall, the higher-density storage is already being sampled today and should be in mass production by July. The process allows a single, thin 32-gigabit (4GB) chip and, with eight stacked chips, will allow 32GB of memory in a single package.

The company anticipates boosting the capacity of 32nm memory in the future and also notes that it will ship half-density, 16-gigabit (2GB) chips on the same process in the fall.

Which customers will use the higher-capacity flash haven’t been specified, though Toshiba is believed one of the 2009 iPhone suppliers and can potentially give the iPhone 32GB of storage. The Apple handset has so far been limited to 16GB of memory as it can only use a single memory package for its storage. The iPod touch allows more and could theoretically keep 64GB of memory.

Toshiba claims that removable cards and USB storage will get the memory first, but that embedded uses like in mobile phones will come soon afterwards.

Protect Your Data with Fujitsu Secure USB

One can never be too careful with one’s private data so one might want to try out Fujitsu’s Secure USB Memory Device which is supposed to protect all that data.

Besides the regular USB memory the device has a built-in battery and a chip which are needed to automatically delete the data after a certain period of time or if someone steals and tries to use it on an unauthorized computer. Not bad for an USB drive. I know I could have used that a number of times. We don’t have all the pricing and availability dates but we’ll keep you in the loop.

DroboPro Storage Robot

The storage robot Drobo has been released in different versions before coming to a halt in 2008. This year, the makers of Drobo are formally introducing a bigger, stronger, and more spacious DroboPro. This 8-bay giant is aimed towards small business and creative professionals, but the average consumer would love it as well.

The DroboPro generally looks like the second-generation Drobos, using the same BeyondRAID intelligent data storage technology and is not created to be used on networks. It can hold up to 16TB of data, has an integrated power supply, and can fully support dual-drive redundancy. Users can switch between single- and dual-drive redundancies with a single press within the Drobo dashboard.

The DroboPro features a bunch of ports in its arsenal, from USB 2.0, twin FireWire 800 sockets, and a gigabit Ethernet jack. Although the creators insist that it is not meant for networks, the DroboPro is open to options of connecting it to a Windows Home Server or a networked computer in order to provide network access to it.

Now, the problem is: who can afford it? Which small business or creative professional is willing to shell out $1,299 minimum on a completely empty DroboPro?

Nova launches iCON 225 USB modem for Mac

Nova Media has launched the iCON 225 (not as pictured), its newest 3G USB modem for Macs. The device provides HSDPA connections with up to 7.2Mbps download and 2Mbps upload speeds, as well as EDGE and GPRS connections providing a maximum of 80kbps upload and 220kbps download speeds. iCON 225 is not SIM locked or bound to a specific network, and allows users to insert SIM cards from most service providers.

Sierra Wireless USB 598 modem available via Verizon

Sierra Wireless has announced that its USB 598 modem is now available for use on the Verizon Wireless network, as it has passed through the provider’s open development program. The 598 is said to be the smallest available modem that taps into Verizon’s EVDO Rev. A network, for download speeds up to 3.1Mbps, and upload speeds as fast as 1.8Mbps. Incorporated TRU-Install software takes users through the initial installation process, and does not require a separate CD or driver. Sierra Wireless Watcher installs from the modem as well, giving users a display of status, performance and network information. The stick moreover has a built-in microSD slot, allowing it to be used as a USB flash drive. A bundled clip and extension cable let users attach the device to a notebook display, for better signal reception.

The USB 598 is going on sale for $199.

Novatel intros Ovation MC935D USB data modem

Novatel Wireless on Tuesday announced it will soon release the Ovation MC935D USB modem that uses HSPA mobile broadband networks for Internet and data access. The MC935D is designed for European networks with its single-band 2,100MHz support, allowing for peak download speeds of 7.2Mbps and upload speeds of 5.76Mbps. EDGE/GPRS networks are also supported for global data access. The MC935D is only 0.4 inches thick for ease of portability, and is plug-and-play ready thanks to the pre-loaded Mobilink 2 Connection Manager software. Novatel’s own NovaSpeed broadband accelerator is also preinstalled on the device, boosting performance when sending and receiving data at the same time.

The Ovation MC935D will be available in the second quarter of 2009, though no prices have been announced.

WD Dips into SSDs with Company Takeover

Western Digital this morning grabbed an edge against rival Seagate by acquiring flash storage maker SiliconSystems for $65 million. The deal takes effect almost immediately and will set the new division towards producing solid-state drives (SSDs) for its parent. No immediate product plans have been announced, but SiliconSystems currently makes SSDs for notebook-friendly 2.5-inch sizes and smaller, including 1.8-inch and memory card-sized drives.

The buyout is likely to spur the development of SSDs in the mainstream by both shipping them through a better-recognized company than most rivals as well as by reducing the cost of producing SSDs through sheer scale. To date, companies like Samsung, SanDisk and Toshiba have been the largest producers of these flash drives and usually sell directly to PC makers while leaving upgrade kits to a small portion of the market.

Seagate and other companies normally focused heavily on rotating hard drives have often been resistant to adopting SSDs, nearing the point where Seagate had considered lawsuits to slow down its competition. The company has since relented and should have SSDs this year.

Acer to Ship four CULV Notebooks, Hurt Apple?

Internal sources at Acer have reportedly claimed today that the company is planning four systems based on Intel’s CULV platform and could pose a significant threat to Apple. CENS hears that systems will launch as soon as April with 11.6-inch, 13-inch, 14-inch and 15-inch models appearing as part of the early lineup. Their technical details aren’t known, though the 13-inch versions would use magnesium alloys to give them strength without impacting weight.

Although the claim is potentially suspect as it contradicts reports that the affordable ultra low-voltage processors won’t be in notebooks until the summer, it backs claims that Dell, HP and other “large-sized international” computer companies are planning systems of their own that could arrive in May.

Regardless, the systems are already thought to likely dent sales of higher-end ultraportables from companies like Apple and Sony. Intel is known to be targeting systems between $599 and $1,299 with CULV and hopes to give both performance and size between slower, Atom-based netbooks and full-speed notebooks without the traditional $1,500 or higher prices of true ultraportables.

Apple has itself said it has “some ideas” for computers in the netbook class but has resisted their slow speeds and small sizes. It has also publicly resisted offering systems below $500 over quality concerns.

Sprint 3G to Enter Garmin, Kodak, SanDisk Devices?

Sprint is hoping to embed its cellular networking in devices from at least Garmin, Kodak and SanDisk, a leak (registration required) on Tuesday suggests. The Wall Street Journal claims to known an individual aware of talks that would see Sprint provide Internet access on these partners’ devices as it does with Amazon’s Kindle 2. Such deals would have similar arrangements and have companies pay in bulk for the data used on the network rather than demand regular subscription fees from the device owners.

What products would use the long-range wireless isn’t specified, though Garmin is most likely to use cellular service for live traffic and weather data. Kodak could potentially use the technology for directly uploading photos from its cameras, and SanDisk could use it for Internet-connected media players or else memory cards with automatic Internet access. Service is most likely over 3G due to coverage but could be replaced by Sprint’s 4G WiMAX network once coverage improves.

The push, which doesn’t currently have a timetable, would be used to stem ongoing losses by getting its networking into as many devices as possible and effectively controlling consumer electronics outside of phones by making its service the practical standard. Other carriers have only taken modest steps into the field, such as AT&T’s bundle deals for 3G service in netbooks.

While provider deals for computers are common, some electronics makers such as Apple have openly resisted tying their non-phone devices to specific networks. The latter has argued that it doesn’t want to restrict the full features of its Macs to any one provider and also uses 3G as a key differential between the iPhone and iPod touch.

Freecom Intros 2.5-inch Rugged External Drive

Earlier this week, Freecom released its new 2.5-inch ToughDrive Sport external hard drive that is claimed to be capable of withstanding adverse conditions. Available in 250GB, 320GB and 500GB capacities, the drive can withstand a drop onto a flat surface from up to 6.6 feet and can soak up to 300G of force when in operation or 1,000G when turned off. Data is also protected against more human threats through 256-bit encryption. An integrated USB 2.0 cable that loops around the drive provides the computer connections, allowing it to transfer data at speeds up to 480Mbps. A Turbo USB driver lets Windows users transfer data at even higher, though unspecified, speeds. Back-up software that allows users to schedule regular file duplication is included with each ToughDrive Sport, which can also be used for porting installations on multiple PCs.

USB 3.0 to Arrive Next Year?

I don’t know about you but I’m looking forward to the official release of USB 3.0. We could all use a little speed improvement when it comes to data transfer and USB 3.0 will definitely come in handy. Agilent Technologies say that test specifications for the new standard will be ratified by the end of June. The certifications are need in order for the final product to arrive to retailers so we’ll have to wait some more. If everything goes well we should see devices packing USB 3.0 by 2010.

Pretec announces world’s first SDXC card

Who needs hard disks if we have cards like these, right? With a promise to go up to 2 terabytes in capacity, the newly announced SDXC standard is already seeing some entries in its segment. The first of its kind is the Pretec 32GB SDXC card, which although does not run into terabytes, seems to be heading in the right direction nonetheless. Data transfer is said to be at 50MB/s, which is a far cry from the 300Mbps transfer speed touted about but still impressive.

There is no information on its price or avaiability, but with no devices announced supporting the format yet, Pretec can take all the time it needs to actually start selling little behemoths.

Imation Apollo 160GB

The Imation Apollo drive is a discrete and simple portable hard drive. The rectangular shaped drive has a solid feel with a clean black exterior, finished with a chrome trim around the sides and is available in a range of capacities starting at 160GB up to a colossal 500GB.

It’s difficult to believe that just a few months ago, 500GB drives were available only in desktop models, but now they fit in your pocket.

Using USB, the Apollo is a plug and play device, and as with most external drives of today, requires no need for drivers or external power source. Computers of old may find that they require the extra USB splitter to provide the drive with enough juice to get running. However, the XP-era PC that I’ve owned for the past five years seems to do just fine without it. Once plugged in and ready for use, a blue LED indicator lights up to show that the drive is powered and active.

Performance-wise, a 700MB file took 32.4 seconds to transfer from my MacBook Pro hard drive. My secondary performance test was the transfer of 1000 JPEG files totalling 2GB. The Apollo completed this on an empty drive in 1 minute 54 seconds. These scores are similar to those of the drives I’ve tested in the past. The limiting factor is perhaps the fact that these drives typically pack the same spec hard drive units limited up to 5400RPM and transfer over USB as opposed to FireWire 400/800 or eSata. That should soon change with the upcoming USB 3.0 spec to arrive next year.

Bundled with the drive is ArcSoft TotalMedia Backup that surprisingly works on both Windows and Mac operating systems. I didn’t get around to using this as the Time Machine backup feature of the latest iteration of Mac OS X already does an excellent job of backing up. Strangely, on my hunt for the best prices for this drive, I discovered that the 250GB Apollo was priced around the same as the 160GB model. For about £60 you can get the 250GB model. Whilst Imation are established in the storage market, there are other big name brands out there with similar or cheaper priced drives.

PD3200 320GB Pocket Media Drive
For anybody wondering, this is a 320GB HP Pocket Media Drive. As of the date of this review, the Amazon description says it’s a “Personal Media Drive”, which is a different type of HP drive. Combined with the lack of a product picture, it had me wondering what would show up. But the product ID (PD3200) is in the Pocket Drive family.

As of now, it’s only a slight improvement in cost per GB over the previous iterations, but for people who need the capacity and have the correct drive bay, this offers a lot of storage. 298GB on mine.
