Motorola Aura Celestial Edition Celebrates 40th Moon Landing Anniversary

Motorola wows us not with another RAZR-like handset, but with the Celestial Edition of its Motorola Aura in order to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the moon landing. This is but the standard Aura with additional extras including original NASA content from the moon landing such as video footage, stills and famous audio snippets like “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”, and “The Eagle has landed”.

Bear in mind that Motorola were the ones who provided the original radio transponder aboard Apollo 11 that in turn, relayed the first words and visuals from the moon to Earth. There is no word on pricing, but knowing how commemorative editions of anything in the world is expensive, this will surely cost you a handsome.

Motorola Ironman to Run on Android Too?

What’s the matter with Moto? Did it wake up of its slumber? We’ve just seen the Calgary which will the its first Android phone and now we hear that a new Motorola phone, the Ironman, will also run on Android.

Nobody announced the Ironman just yet so we don’t know if it’s a special edition Iron Man handset or just a codename and the phone is expected to be launched in the third quarter of the year. The phone will feature a good CPU, a full QWERTY keyboard, 3G connectivity, WiFi and an impressive camera. Which one do you like best, the Calgary or the Ironman?

Motorola Calgary to be the First Android Phone from Moto

Motorola has been working for quite a while now on its first Android handset and we finally have a name and some pictures. The Calgary will be the first Android phone to come from Motorola plants. Like the G1 the Calgary will have a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard and the Moto phone will focus on social networking. The phone might arrive some time in the second quarter although nobody wants to confirm that right now. We have no leaked specs at this time and there’s no pricing available for the Calgary. At least we know its coming soon…

Motorola A4500 Verizon world phone shows at FCC

An FCC filing tipping up today has shown that Motorola will have a full QWERTY smartphone for Verizon in the near future. Known very early on as the Napoleon, the A4500 is now confirmed to be a World Edition phone that would support both EVDO (likely Revision A) and GSM for calling abroad. It also betrays the existence of a 2-megapixel camera and Wi-Fi. It’s not known when the A4500 will ship. Leaks showed of working models as early as July of last year and reveal a protracted development process for the handset. As Windows Mobile 6.1 is still poised to be the operating system, however, the smartphone is likely to show before the fall, when Windows Mobile 6.5 will reach shipping handsets.

Motorola Korea outs MOTO V10 with gradient finish

Motorola last week introduced its MOTO V10 for the Korean market, which sports a body color that flows from black at the top of the handset to red at the bottom. The dual-color body has a soft feel material on its backside for a better grip. It also gets dual displays, with about 10 functions accessible while the flip phone is closed, and all accessible via the internal 2.2-inch, 240×320 resolution display. The handset includes navigation functionality, Bluetooth, a 2-megapixel camera and MP3 playback capabilities. It can likewise access on-demand services for music and video. The V10 has a standard microSD slot that allows users to add 2GB of storage space to its integrated 256MB of memory.

The MOTO V10 is available at SK Telecom retailers in Korea, though no pricing information is available. Whether or not it will surface in North America hasn’t been discussed.

Motorola W7 on the Way

Motorola has a new W series phone for you, the W7. The handset is a slider phone capable to deal with China Unicom’s future 3G network. That’s where the phone was spotted so far and we assume that’s where it’s going to be available initially.

Verizon’s Motorola A4500 World phone hits the FCC

FCC, that ever resourceful authority giving us insights on what to expect in the near future, has revealed a cell phone from Motorola destined for Verizon, the A4500 World Phone. Details revealed indicate a candybar form factor with a QWERTY keypad, WiFi, fingerprint scanner, microSD expansion, EVDO data speeds, stereo Bluetooth, and quad-band GSM world roaming capability. The Motorola A4500 will be a smartphone running Windows Mobile 6.1 and will also have a 2-megapixel camera, which seems to be added just for the kicks, we guess.

No news from either Motorola or Verizon’s front yet about the A4500, but we will surely tell you when that pops up.

Motorola adds W6 to its MOTOROKR line

While the previous cell phones released by Motorola in its MOTOROKR line have been music-oriented for the most part, the W6 now adds another facet to this vowel-dropping segment – Fitness. The new MOTOROKR W6 comes preloaded with a couple of applications that aid in keeping the user fit and spry. All it needs are the user’s vital stats like age, sex, weight, and height and the application will tailor a suitable exercise regimen. Other features drive this clamshell right down to the low-end category with a 1.3 megapixel camera, microSD support for up to 2GB, stereo Bluetooth, and dedicated music keys for quick access to the user’s favorite tunes.

Motorola i465 confirmed, en route to Nextel

Back in February we got our hands on some leaked promotional shots of the Motorola i465. Well, both Motorola and Nextel have come forth and confirmed the phone’s existence and stating it will be on the Nextel iDEN network sometime soon.

If you don’t know what iDEN is, it’s Nextel’s Push-to-Talk walkie-talkie like service that sets the company apart from the rest.

The i465’s QWERTY keyboard coupled with the Push-to-Talk features might spurr some interest. But with Motorola on a steady decline, will anything be enough to regain the companies once legendary image?

Hands-on: Motorola’s iPhone pseudo-rival

While at CTIA this week, Electronista has had the chance to try some of Motorola’s latest phones, including the QA4 Evoke that was just launched at the event. The slider is unofficially pitched as one of Motorola’s first real attempts at a competitor to the iPhone, and in practice we’d tend to agree, even if it’s not aimed at the exact same audience. Aside from the self-evident black-and-chrome design similarities, it shares a capacitive touchscreen (a first for Motorola) and is very easy to navigate with finger swipes and taps, though it doesn’t support multi-touch. The interface, however, is noticeably different. Rather than use multiple home screens for icons that launch apps, multiple apps themselves each occupy a “page” on the front; users simply flick to access calling, messaging, weather or similar tasks. The again iPhone-like home button triggers a launcher for other apps, which are mostly limited to what come with the device. We found it surprisingly easy to use, but limited. However, the company also has one important edge over Apple until the release of iPhone OS 3.0: although typing while upright is done with a T9-style input, tilting the phone on its side automatically kicks in a comfortably-sized QWERTY layout for most any app.A spokeswoman for Motorola says the company doesn’t want to portray the Evoke as a smartphone, like its most obvious challenger, and instead sees it as a high-end feature phone that just happens to excel in touchscreen features. Even so, the cellphone maker will need to price the phone well below $199 on a contract to make the difference clear. Expect it to reach either Sprint, Verizon or both in the spring.

While at the event, we also had the opportunity to try the Aura luxury phone. It is, essentially, what pictures would suggest: a simple but very well-built and unique phone. The focal point, its circular display, is hard to ignore and may be worth the money for its target audience by itself, though we also found the all-metal shell and the watch-inspired swivel design impressive, if not as automatic as we’d like. Still, the chief issue for the phone is its cost relative to technical features: at $2,000 for an unlocked phone with EDGE-only data and no GPS, the Aura is likely to only ever be sold to people who would otherwise buy a Vertu phone instead.

Motorola Launches QA4 Evoke Touch Phone

Motorola today ended speculation by launching the QA4 Evoke, one of its very few full-touchscreen phones not originally designed for the Asian market and its closest current rival to the iPhone. Pitched as a social networking device, the phone’s 2.8-inch display is used as a large view for a full HTML browser, RSS feeds and shortcuts to MySpace and YouTube but becomes a landscape QWERTY keyboard when the phone is tilted on its side. A slide-out number pad streamlines calling. The handset is designed with North American networks in mind and will support both EVDO Rev. A for its 3G as well as CDMA for calls. Motorola also gives it a 2-megapixel camera, true GPS and microSD storage up to 8GB. The company names no carriers and only mentions a spring release timeframe, though the network choice will likely put it on Sprint or Verizon.

Motorola to Release 10 Mobile Phones in 2009

It appears as if luck has not been good to Motorola these days. This fledgling cell phone maker has been cutting costs quicker than you say “Razr,” but Wall Street analysts have speculated that it is probably because the company has bigger plans for 2009.

Oppenheimer & Co. analyst Ittai Kidron said that Motorola appears to be preparing for its introduction of 10 – yes, 10-smartphones for the second half of 2009. With smartphones being one of the few products that are seen as bullish for the coming years, Motorola is planning to focus on delivering smartphones that run on Google’s open source Android OS, with at least one of the new devices will be operating on Windows Mobile.

“With sentiment at an all-time low and investors’ attention lost, we believe Motorola warrants another look,” noted Kidron. The cell phone company, based in Schaumburg, Illinois, has had its plans delayed because of the company’s financial problems despite having a new leader in the person of Sanjay Jha, Motorola’s co-chief executive officer who was recruited from Qualcomm Inc.

Cell phone revenues of Motorola dropped 70 percent for the past two years. However, analysts say that the impact of the troubles Motorola has been facing have been minimal at best in terms of the company’s overall profitability because volumes have shrunk so much.

ZTE Replaces Motorola as the 5th Largest Handset Maker

ZTE is one of the largest telecommunication equipment makers in China and that seems to be good enough to make ZTE the 5th largest handset maker in the world. The position was formerly held my Motorola but this will all change this year. Nokia, Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson will lead the pack with ZTE and Motorola following. It looks like ZTE has shipped 45 million phones in 2008 and it seems ready to surpass Motorola in the first quarter of 2009. ZTE might also be able to leave Sony Ericsson behind which isn’t doing that good momentarily.

A certain Motorola Evoke QA4 phone has appeared on Motorola’s site although the phone isn’t arriving any time soon, and there’s no point even talking about prices just yet.

The phone hasn’t been officially announced yet but oddly enough it made it to the official site. Which must mean that it was just a simple human error, wasn’t it? The slider phone will feature a 2.8-inch touchscreen display, a standard 12-button keypad and 3G connectivity. But we’d need more details to judge this Moto handset.

Looks like the Motorola A455 is just another middle order CDMA handset with a QWERTY keypad added in, making it more of a mid-range messaging device more than anything else. The previously used moniker of RUSH2 is dropped in favor of “Rival,” which sounds pretty absurd when it looks it won’t be competing with any other handset in particular. Other tidbits leaked include dual-band CDMA support with EV-DO Rev A., stereo Bluetooth, a paltry 2-megapixel camera, microSD/SDHC support, an mp3 player with a a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and USB 2.0 connectivity.

The Evoke QA4, in spite of having a somewhat spacious touchscreen display, is a sleek slider falls into the same category as the Rival, and fails to evoke much enthusiasm in us. Features are somewhat analogous to the A455 and include a 2mpx camera, microSD/SDHC support, mp3 player, Bluetooth with A2DP, and voice recognition capability.

No info on a release date or pricing could be found, but as always, we will keep you posted when that happens.
