Verizon Samsung Omnia Runs on Windows Mobile 6.5 Already?

Filed Under (Cellphones, Samsung, Samsung, Smartphones) by admin on 06-05-2009 >> 68 views

omnia

It looks like the first Windows Mobile 6.5 running device is the Samsung i910 Omnia and not the Touch Pro2 or Touch Diamond2 from HTC. How is that possible you ask? Well it seems that a cooked up Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM is out there available to install on the Omnia. The custom ROM will strip the Verizon Wireless Samsung Omnia of some applications like VZ Navigator, VZ AppZone, Digital Frame, Shozu, Silver Inbox and more but it cludes various apps like Google Maps, the YouTube player and the WM 6.5 Facebook application.

In order to properly flash your device you’d better get your hands on an XP-powered machine with USB 2.0 port. Simply follow the link for specific installation details.

May 11 is the day when Verizon Wireless will launch a new Samsung phone, the SCH-U750 or the Alias 2. Or so do people say thus far. The phone is similar in design to its predecessor, the U740. The Alias also has a dual-hinged mechanism but the QWERTY keyboard is replaced with a dynamic keyboard. How does it work? Well, when you open the phone in portrait clam shell mode, you will have a standard numeric keypad available. When you open it in landscape mode and a QWERTY keyboard comes to life. Other specs incluyde a 2.6-inch QVGA internal display, 2.0 megapixel camera, voice commands, dedicated hot key for one-touch Bluetooth access and various Verizon customizations.

The Alias 2 doesn’t have a price just yet but we expect it to cost anywhere from $200 to $250 before rebates. Of course, you will be paying a lot less since you’re going to get it with a new 2-year contract.

Samsung Instinct s30

Samsung Instinct s30

Samsung recently unveiled the Instinct s30 mobile phone, which on the outside looks like a smaller version of the original Instinct.  However, the Instinct s30 is not really a mini Instinct.

Compared to the original Instinct, the s30 has a far sexier appearance.  The curves around the edges make it more pleasing to look at compared to the blockish stature of the original Instinct.  The 3.2-inch display with 432 x 240 resolution, however, leaves us begging for a much clearer screen.  It takes quite a while to turn the power off, and the teeny-weeny 1GB microSD card slot makes it hard to eject.  The saving grace in the Instinct s30’s design is having a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack.

The Instinct s30 uses the similar OS to the original Instinct, which some users find disappointing.  The icons on the main screen could not be customized, and the text messages still appear as a pop-up alert even when the message panel or web browser is loaded, making an utter nuisance.  The built-in applications for MySpace, YouTube, Facebook, and Photobucket come as mildly impressive, but the applications found in BlackBerry App World come as superior.  But when it comes to the basic tasks like typing a text message, making calls, and checking voicemail, users can definitely rely on the s30. samsung-tocco-lite-s5230

UK customers will be able to choose a new Samsung phone this May. The Tocco Lite is a touchscreen phone which doesn’t have any 3G support. That’s a weird combination but the whole 3G-less feature will make people change their minds about buying one.

Nevertheless the Tocco Lite or the Samsung S5230 will offer you the following:

  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity
  • 3 inch TFT touchscreen display with 262K color and 240 x 400 pixels
  • TouchWiz UI
  • Accelerometer
  • Facebook, MySpace and YouTube widgets
  • Bluetooth 2.1
  • Samsung DNSe 2.0 music technology
  • FM Radio with RDS
  • 3.2 MP camera
  • 50 MB of built-in memory
  • microSD card support, up to 8 GB
  • 104 x 53 x 11.9 mm

All we need now are some prices and we expect the Tocco Lite to be available for a great price since it lacks that important 3G support.

NEC-Renesas merger to rival Intel, Samsung

Semiconductor giants NEC and Renesas today said they would merge in a deal likely to change the electronics industry. The two plan to finish talks by July that would create a single company by next April. Such a deal would give them roughly $13 billion in combined yearly sales and would make it the single-largest Japanese company building processing technology.

Observers view the merger as the result of financial pressure created by the economy, which is threatening significant losses for the separate companies. Both are profitable but under threat as fewer chips get sold with reduced demand for home electronics.

The deal would also create the world’s third-largest semiconductor company behind Intel and Samsung and is likely to influence the choice of mobile processors, storage and other parts normally made by now smaller companies, such as SanDisk and Toshiba. Hitachi and Mitsubishi already share joint control of Renesas.

Samsung phone also supports the full HSPA spec for 3G and carries Bluetooth 2.0, GPS and Wi-Fi for its peripherals, mapping and networking. O2 Germany will be the first carrier to pick up the i7500 and will launch it in June with a one-month exclusive in the country until July. Whether or not it will come to the US isn’t specified, though Samsung has previously said an Android phone would reach the country today became the second company ever to formally launch a smartphone based on Google’s Android platform. The i7500 is one of the thinnest full touchscreen phones at 0.47 inches deep and is also billed as one of the most advanced: it centers on a 3.2-inch, 320×480 AMOLED screen that not only provides much better color accuracy and brightness but also helps extend battery life. A 5-megapixel camera with autofocusing and flash gives it the most advanced photography of any Android phone, while it’s also the first with the OS to have 8GB of built-in memory on top of a microSDHC card slot. The Android 1.5-basedsometime in spring. It supports 3G on the 1,700MHz band needed for use on T-Mobile’s US network.

The launch of the Samsung phone is crucial to Android as it becomes the first phone on the platform from a top 5 phone manufacturer, increasing the potential for market share. Previous phones have been made only by HTC and have been limited to T-Mobile. Other carriers are only getting the option of Android devices in May with the release of the HTC Magic on Vodafone, TIM and other networks. Through the limitation, Android has been growing half as quickly as iPhones in terms of data use and has just a small fraction of the actual market within the the US as well as abroad.
