ASUS Makes DVD-equipped Eee PC 1004DN Official

ASUS today quickly added to its new wave of netbooks by launching its long-expected Eee PC 1004DN. The 10-inch system is one of the very few netbooks to have its own, built-in DVD burner and is no longer dependent on either external storage or networks to install software. Despite the addition, the system is only slightly heavier than an average netbook at 3.2 pounds and is 1.3 inches thick at its thickest point. The computer is also ASUS’ first true system to ship with Intel’s new GN40 chipset, which gives it GMA 4500 graphics capable of driving HD video playback and faster 3D at the expense of slight battery life, though ASUS still claims a maximum battery life of about 5.9 hours. It also draws on the faster 1.66GHz Atom and ‘chiclet’ keyboard used in both the 1000HE and 1002H.

Accompanying the core features are a 120GB hard drive, a 1.3-megapixel webcam, 802.11n Wi-Fi and room for up to 2GB of RAM in one slot. ASUS as is typical doesn’t specify ship dates or prices, though the 1004DN should be available in the US as well as abroad.
