Sony intros noise-cancelling Bluetooth headphones

Sony Europe on Monday announced the upcoming release of two sets of Bluetooth 2.1 headphones with Sony’s cVc echo and noise cancellation software, the DR-BT100CX in-ear earbuds and headband DR-BT101. Both can handle phone calls thanks to a built-in microphone and call answer controls as well. The earbuds use 9mm Neodymium drivers while the latter sport a 30mm speaker made of the same material. Integrated music controls include volume adjustment and track forward and back buttons. Either set is recharged with a USB cable, with life rated at up to 12 hours for the larger BT101s and 8 hours for the BT100CX set. The earbuds ship with three sizes of silicon earbuds for a comfortable fit in user’s ears. The A2DP, AVRCP, HFP and HSP Bluetooth profiles are supported by either product.

Sony has not released ship dates nor pricing information for either new set.

Tunewear launches TuneSonic Crystal earphones

The earphone delivers a high-resolution 9mm neodymium magnet driver that the company says produces clearer sound with input as strong as 5mW. Review: Z.buds iPhone Earbuds by ZAGG Audio

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that the iPhone is capable of producing quality audio. If you’re going to spend money on accessories, a headphone upgrade is essential. The stock earbuds are functional, but let’s face the facts. The white plastic earbuds that everyone wears don’t sound that great. They’re not very comfortable to wear for long periods, and the cord gets tangled after two seconds in a jacket pocket. Getting a pair of Z.buds is like getting a whole new iPhone. Let me tell you why.

The Pyramidal Package

As soon as the Z.buds arrived I was struck by the unique packaging. ZAGG is all about innovation, and since the Z.buds have won the 2009 CES Innovations Design and Engineering Showcase award they have a box to match the product inside.

The plastic insert pulls out of the recyclable cardboard box. I was impressed that the Z.buds are marked RoHS compliant. For those who don’t know, that means Zagg is using cutting-edge manufacturing technology to make Z.buds free of toxic chemicals and heavy metals like lead.

Scissors are required to open the plastic part of the package. Besides the Z.buds you’ll find two sizes of clear silicone ear bud adaptors, two sizes of black foam adaptors, and a set of black silicone adaptors. The smaller black foam adaptors come already attached to the Z.buds. There’s also a black drawstring bag you can use for storage of the adaptors. Although it’s possible, you probably won’t use the bag to store the actual headphones. You will never want to take them out of your ears or unplug them from your iPhone.

Wearing the Z.buds

At first it was awkward putting the Z.buds on. They are completely different than the stock earphones. There are three sliders on the nylon cord, and one of these must be pulled up first, then you can put your head through the hole that is created between the left and right cords. The ear buds can then be pulled up from behind your neck and into your ears. The microphone/call answer button will hang to the side almost over your shoulder.

The Z.buds are brilliant in their simplicity. Although it may feel strange to have the mic up in this position, it guarantees the mic will never be covered or blocked by a jacket, for example. The mic will also not dangle down and get in your way. When you pull the phones out of your ears they drop down to the side and are suspended by the slider behind your neck (what Zagg calls Hangin’ Tight). This allows them to be easily located and re-inserted.

Ear Fit

I’ve always had difficulty with the fit and comfort of in-ear headphones. Again, the Z.buds impressed me right away. The black adaptors that came on the unit are similar to foam earplugs. Holding them in my ear for a few seconds I could hear them expanding to fit. With no music playing I realized they were actually blocking out sound much like earplugs. This makes them incredibly comfortable to wear and they actually stay put. Part of this is also because they are suspended by your neck and not hanging the full weight of the cord on your ears.

Sound Quality

Deep bass and crisp highs. No distortion at high volume. In fact, Z.buds sound like much larger headphones. Since they block out external noise your music sounds great even when walking down crowded streets or if other music is playing nearby. For the first time with in-ear headphones I’m able to focus on what I want to hear instead of other noise. One of the best features of the Z.buds is an in-line volume control. This makes it easy to change the volume without pulling out the iPhone. My only complaint is that I found the start/stop button (next to the mic) to require firm pressure to activate. This is also the answer call button, which brings us to calling on the Z.buds.

Call Quality

Even with the mic suspended up by the side of my head I was able to make and receive calls without a problem. Indoors, outdoors, and in noisy environments the person on the other end of the line was able to hear me clearly. One thing I found strange was talking with both Z.buds in my ears. The earphones are so good at blocking outside noise that it was difficult to tell how loudly I was talking. Personally, when I make phone calls (especially driving) I only use one earphone anyway. No reason to hear my caller’s voice in stereo.

Cord Management

Besides the high quality of the earphones themselves, the cord is well-constructed and looks sharp. The Z.buds come with either red or black nylon cords. Metal sliders stay where you put them, they actually take some effort to move. I almost dropped my iPhone the day I received the Z.buds and luckily they were plugged in. I actually stopped it from hitting the floor by holding onto the Z.buds cord and the plug didn’t budge. Of course I wouldn’t recommend hanging your iPhone by the cord if you don’t have to.

There’s over three feet of cord to work with when the Z.buds are hanging around the neck. Even with all this, after throwing them into a jacket pocket the cord does not get tangled up. This feature alone makes purchasing the Z.buds worth every penny. There’s a loop of string in the middle (next to the volume control) that you can use to hang on a button to keep the cord from dangling. For those like myself who think this is cord management overkill, the loop is removable by simply unscrewing a small metal cap.

Audio-Technica ATH-CK7 In-Ear Headphones

The standard pair of headphones that most company’s bundle with their players are at best average and if your looking to make the most of your podcasts and music then the best mp3 player and highest bit rates wont count for much if the device your using to actually reproduce the sound are not up to the job.

Here we have a look at a pair of headphones from Audio-Technica, a little heard of yet major company in the world of audio reproduction, the ATH-CK7 with titanium housing and 11 mm driver with Neodymium magnet.

For those that don’t know what use a titanium housing and Neodymium driver is to you then basically it means the whole thing is stiff and as such means more of the energy used to create the sound is retained and doesn’t dissipate through the housing meaning in theory better sound, as for the Neodymium bit that’s just a very light and expensive material that allows the part that produces the sound to move faster allowing faster changes in frequency’s i.e. from bass to treble. This becomes even more important if you only have one speaker producing all the sound as is the case with in-ear ‘phones’.

What makes the ATH-CK7 standout from the crowd are that they come with 11mm drivers (or speakers for us laymen types) and still manage to pump out a frequency range of 12 – 24,000Hz. Until now all in-ear headphones come with a 9mm driver, which is all well and good until you realise that the bigger the speaker the better the bass, treble is easy to reproduce in such a small speaker, but when it comes to bass and lower mids size is everything and the whole extra 2mm that your getting makes all the difference.

The ATH-CK7 are not cheap, you can pick up a pair from Audiocubes or Semsons & Co for around $120 but after running these very attractive transducers in for about 12hrs you’ll have no doubt that this is money well spent. Spin some high quality podsafe music above 128kbps and immediately you get a sense of involvement normally reserved for hifi speakers. The bass is there but it is a tuneful bass not some in your face boom that pretends to be bass. Mids and treble are dealt with equally well without a hint of sibilance, meaning it doesn’t scream at you. Move on up to a wav file and if you’re an audiophile looking to satisfy your audio fix then the Audio-Technica’s wo’t disappoint.

To top it all off the ATH-CK7 are very comfortable to wear and come with three different sized sleeves to cater for all ear canals. If you are looking to upgrade your ‘buds then these are definitely worth checking out.

Sound quality:
Sound quality is very beautiful:nicely balanced highs,mids and lows and just the right amount of bass,better than Sony’s MDR-EX85.

Using this with a NWZ-A815, I found the EQ set to custom 1 and VPT off to be the best settings for the ATH-CX6.

With a S705 and ATRAC encoded music, it was supremely good with Rolling Stones tracks-nicely balanced and at the right volume (maxed but not so lid as to cause to hearing loss).

Listened to Michael Jackson and The Beatles-the sound reproduced was supreme in quality and clarity.

Overall:

I was extremely impressed by Audio Technica ATH-CK6 “9Styles” because these are well built in-ear headphones with 9 different ways of wearing them.

Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7 QuietPoint Active Noise-Cancelling Headphones

The latest export from Audio-Technica are the ATH-ANC7 QuietPoint headphones. They are a noise-canceling headphone set with comfortable earpads and a detachable cable. Although they suffer from a few sound issues and can’t really be used without the noise-cancellation feature, these headphones are a reasonable choice for frequent-fliers looking for new cans in the $100 to $200 range.

The Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7 QuietPoint headphones aren’t what you might consider the most portable headphones on the block, with earcups that measure roughly 3.7 inches by 3 inches. However, these do fold flat for storage, and you get a hard shell case to transport them in. The package also includes an airplane adapter, which adds to their travel-friendliness. Although Audio-Technica asserts that the ATH-ANC7s are closed-back headphones, we find that a fair amount of sound leaks through thanks to a small pass-through speaker on the back of each earcup. This is worth noting if you have concerns about disturbing your neighbor, or (ahem) would rather outsiders not be part of your listening experience.

One of the benefits of around-the-ear headphones is that they have relatively large earcups, which generally are more comfortable than those that rest on the cartilage of your ears. This is certainly true of the ATH-ANC7 QuietPoint headphones, which are lined with a cushy padding that rests comfortably against the sides of the head. The top of the headband is padded, while the plastic edges are designed to curve out and away from the head. The headband is also fully adjustable, and the included, detachable cable is plenty long at 63 inches.

As the name suggests, the ATH-ANC7 QuietPoint headphones offer an active noise-cancellation feature. The feature draws its power from a single AAA battery (included), inserted into the left earpiece. A switch on this same side allows you to control the power of this feature (the headphones work whether it is on or off). Audio-Technica reports that these headphones reduce background noise by up to 85 percent (or 20dB, for the technical people out there). Although we have no way to accurately measure this amount, we found that these headphones succeed at blocking a significant amount of low-end rumblings. A nearby server was completely canceled out, and our cubemate’s voice lost its bass tones. Still, don’t expect sharper noises to be noticeably diminished.

Coming around to sound quality, we have a few minor quibbles with the ATH-ANC7 QuietPoint headphones. With the noise-cancellation feature turned off, sound definitely has a muffled quality, with vocals and high-end details giving the impression that you’re listening underwater. Yet, with the noise canceling turned on, the treble seems slightly brittle for the most part, and straight-up harsh in certain cases. Industrial metal such as Orgy and some party hip-hop tracks with a lot of high-end sound effects suffer. That being said, most genres come through fine, and the mids are certainly warm and encompassing. Bass response is also tight and plenty impressive–though not as thumping as some competitors. The little pass-through speakers mentioned earlier do a nice job of opening up the sound and keeping it outside of your head.

Audio-Technica ATH-ANC3 QuietPoint earphones

Ultraportable earphones with active noise cancellation aren’t terribly prolific; you’re much more likely to find larger, over-the-ear models with this feature. But considering the fact that these ‘phones are best suited to drown out the sounds associated with commuting and other travel, it follows that a compact design makes good sense here–the more portable, the better. Audio-Technica seems to want to capitalize on this idea with its latest QuietPoint headphones, the ATH-ANC3. These toteable earbuds feature a super compact design, a built-in noise-cancellation module, and useful travel accessories. The $170 price tag may be hard for some potential buyers to swallow, though, considering the earphones’ cheap-feeling plastic build and failure to serve up truly stellar sound.

The ATH-ANC3’s earbuds might be hard plastic, but they are impressively small, which makes for a nice, low-profile design when worn. We also noticed no discomfort after wearing them for more than an hour, so we give points for that. However, keep in mind that your comfort level will depend on the size and shape of your ear. A Y-cable measuring approximately 13 inches long descends from the earpieces. It joins and continues for another 16 inches or so to the plastic noise-cancellation module. Here, you will find several attributes of note.

First, on the rear, there is a compartment for the single AAA battery (included) as well as a built-in clip for attaching the unit onto yourself. It doesn’t seem to be the most durable clip we’ve come across, but it gets the job done. On the front of the module, there is a switch for controlling the power of the noise cancellation feature and an indicator light that glows red when it’s activated. There’s also a monitor button, which lets you quickly mute your music and the noise-canceling circuitry to hear what’s going on around you. It’s handy, but take note that the module must be switched on for the mute function to work.

Coming out of the other end of the ATH-ANC3’s noise-canceling module is about an additional 8 inches of cable that terminates in a 3.5mm straight gold-plated plug. All these wires amount to a fair amount of tangling, but Audio-Technica includes a nice, zippered hard-shell case for storing the earphones and managing the cords. The case has a variety of built-in compartments for the other extras that are included in the package. There’s an extension cable, which can add about 18 more inches of give to the setup. You also get an airplane plug adapter and a set of three (small, medium, large) silicone eartips.

The ATH-ANC3 QuietPoint earphones are reasonable little performers. The noise-cancellation feature works very well, sufficiently quieting the hum of our over-active air conditioner. If you’re able to get a good seal with your ear with the provided silicone fittings, you’ll be rewarded with some passive noise blocking as well. This same seal is infinitely important if you want to experience the bass that the earphones have to offer, which is not super thumping, but still quite present. High-end detail was also well-represented, and the mids came through warm and clear. Overall, while music did not sound quite stellar in our tests, audio quality was definitely solid.

Audio Technica ATH-AD700 Open-air Dynamic Headphones

Many people underestimate the differences between closed and open headphones, pegging both models in a certain series as having a similar sound. Audio Technica produces a both a closed and open variant of each model (the A900 and AD900), and whilst they definitely have a trademark sound across the range, often other elements couldn’t sound more different.

Take the AD700 for example. Many people would simply look at the model number and slot it somewhere between the A500 and A900 in terms of sound quality – big mistake! The AD700 has a noticeably lighter sound that really lends it a different sonic signature altogether.

We would describe the AD700 as the perfect classical headphone in this price bracket, but it is also wonderful for jazz, acoustic guitar and piano pieces. It is an open model, which means bass tends not to be as booming and powerful, (on a closed model there is room for echo) so on heavy metal and dance tracks, bass fanatics will probably miss the extra punch. That said, the bass is incredibly quick and tight on this model – a case of quality over quantity – so it really depends how you like your music to sound.

The upper mid tones and highs are the real strengths of this model. The AD700 has some of the most exquisite detail and separation you will hear without spending several hundred dollars more. Instruments flow from one to the other with a beautiful layering effect that brings out the full sound of a large performance (eg: Orchestra). Some people will find the highs a little too bright for their tastes, but we absolutely adored the sound.

The mid range was rich and slightly warm, with a lovely, smooth texture. Our acoustic guitar rock, songs such as Patience by Guns and Roses sounded simply amazing.

The other real strength of this model is the soundstage. To put it simply, we haven’t heard anything as immersive as the AD700. The power and positioning of the individual instruments is mind boggling, surpassing pretty much everything we have seen in this price range (including the A900). Soundstage is paramount to a proper listening experience. If you can close your eyes and visualise the sound in the appropriate place it goes a long way towards creating that spine tingling feeling we strive for when listening to our favourite tunes. The massive soundstage is also perfect for positional audio. We’d venture that in terms of un-amplified headphones, it doesn’t get much better for games than the AD700s.

The AD700 sports the classical Audio Technica Design that has served them so well with this series. Large cups padded with velour and supported by two padded wings that rest on the top of the head. Stretching over that are two thin strips of plastic which appear quite flimsy but feel strong to touch. All of Audio Technica’s headphones are incredibly comfortable, and this model is no exception. As an open headphone, the AD700’s cups merely rest against the ear, rather than enclosing it, which made it easy to listen to even during sessions of up to six hours. They are however rather large, so wearing them around the streets will earn you the odd confused stare.

The open design of course leads to the inevitable problem of sound leakage. The AD700s do not isolate well, but that is to be expected. If you plan on using these in an office, ensure you invest in some ear plugs for those around you.

Audio-Technica ATH-AD400

I recently purchased a pair of Audio Technica ATH-AD400 open air headphones. I was extremely anxious to get them because I love the sound I’ve gotten from open air phones like my Koss Portapro and Grado SR60 headphones. They arrived in the mail the other day and I can happily share that I am not disappointed with them in the least.

The ATH-AD400s are a great pair of headphones. They are circumaural headphones, which means that the earpads do not sit on your ears, they actually surround them. The earpads are made of velvet and are very comfortable. They do make my ears a little hot after a long listening session though. I’ve been taking them off after 30 – 40 minutes of use and taking a short break. The phone also sport Audio Technica’s 3D wing supprt mechanism. This allows for a very unique way to form fit the phones to the shape of your head.

The sound quality is stellar so far. I mainly used recordings by jazz and female singers to try out these phones. I’ve listened to several MDs recorded at SP and Hi-SP. I’ve also listened to CDs on three different CD players including my Sony ES model. The sound quality across the entire audible spectrum is very nice. The highs are very detailed to me, I really enjoy the clear and precise sound when I listen to a female vocal. Mids are rich as well. The music I hear on recordings by artists like Jonatha Brooke are so enjoyable (despite the overuse of eletronic keyboards on her albums). The lows are very full as well. The kick drum on many tunes really thumps. I was able to listen at comfortable levels by raising the volume on my NH600D to only 12/30. I’m happily surprised by how easily these phones are driven by the weak amps in portable gear. I’m anxious to pair these phones up with a dedicated headphone amp so I can really see what they’re made of.

At this point I’m really enamored of these headphones. They’re easily my favorite pair of phomes for use when I’m stationary. These are by no means portable phones. Apart from their size my only other complaint would be the heat that they trap when worn, as I said earlier, give yourself a break from time to time when using these phones for extended listening sessions.

Audio Technica ATH-AD300

Headphones are a tough thing to buy. For some, the concept of spending more than $50 on a pair boggles the mind, whilst a persistent few are happy to shell out hundreds or thousands of dollars to get a top quality audio setup. There is however a middle ground, which offers the average consumer affordable audio technology that is really a big step up from what they are used to hearing.

When people think headphones, they think Philips or Sony, but there are several big name audio brands that specialize in the production of headphones. Audio Technica is one of the more prominent of these, and the ATH-AD300 is one of their entry level products. Audio Technica are renowned for their high quality DJ and studio products, but the AD300’s prove they have the necessary skills to satisfy the home audio market as well.

The first thing to understand about the AD300s is that they are not a portable unit. They have full over-ear cups, and a two tiered headstrap. Whilst they could be worn outside, they won’t be fitting in any bags, and the fact that they are open design headphones means you’ll be hearing every jeer and insult the multitude of passers-by will all but definitely be hurling at you.

The open design however also means there is significant sound leakage. The main difference between open and closed headphones is how the speaker is shielded, and on an open design sound tends to leak out, making it very audible to people in the nearby vicinity.

Of course sound quality is what is really important with headphones, and anyone who might be affected by leaking sound shouldn’t be complaining about the AD300s. For their price point they sound very good. The best way to describe them is a soft listening headphone. The sound wasn’t as punchy and in your face as some more expensive models we’ve heard, but that is in no way a bad thing. It comes down to personal preference.

When placed next to similarly priced models from more general home entertainment companies the difference is clear; the AD300s blow the others away. The sound is crisp, with solid differentiation between instruments. The soundstage is very impressive (soundstage is a term used to describe how three dimensional the sound feels), which is a characteristic of open headphone design. Bass response was above average, and the mid and treble ranges sounded great. This model doesn’t do anything outstanding, and obviously won’t compare to Audio Technica’s more extravagant models, but in terms of value for money it competes very well.

The design is quite comfortable, although the open style may feel a little strange to some people. It sits quite widely on the head, and for people used to tight headphones it will feel quite out of place. The cups themselves are padded with a furry, velvet-like substance that is quite smooth against the skin to begin with, but we wound up getting itchy ears after long listening sessions. This became less of a problem after a few days of use, and we began to find the AD300s extremely comfortable.

It is worth noting that chain stores such as Dick Smith will generally only stock headphones from name home entertainment brands such as Sony, and so to locate other brands such as Audio Technica or Beyer, one must go to a specialty store. There are several prominent online stores that will stock these products, so don’t despair if you cannot find them immediately. After a little looking they should be easy to locate, and they are definitely worth the effort.

Apple Computer iPod nano Lanyard Headphones (Second-Generation)

Pros: A simple combination of newly improved Apple iPod earbuds with an all-white fabric lanyard necklace and matching white plastic attachment for the aluminum-bodied iPod nanos. Easy to adjust, minimalist design that’s visually inoffensive.

Cons: High price. Nothing special about either the earphones or the lanyard. Color of accessory doesn’t visually match top-end, all-black iPod nano; no black-colored version is available.

Last week’s introduction of the second-generation, aluminum-bodied iPod nano forced Apple Computer to introduce several refreshed accessories that fit the new model’s slightly changed body size and shape. The most changed of the bunch is Apple’s second-generation version of the iPod nano Lanyard Headphones ($39), a combination of white fabric necklace and official Apple earbuds that makes three changes from the original version we reviewed last year (iLounge rating: B-), one positive, one neutral, and one negative. Overall, the new Lanyard Headphones are a toss-up on value for the dollar.

When we reviewed the original Lanyard Headphones last year, we described them as a white adjustable rope with two standard iPod earbuds and a chrome iPod nano holder attached. This year’s model does away with the chrome attachment in favor of white plastic, resizes the attachment so that it fits only the aluminum, second-generation nanos, and replaces the old “standard” earbuds with Apple’s latest, more comfortable pack-ins. Though the earbud change is a net positive for this design, the Lanyard Headphones’ continued high price and other factors prevent us from feeling totally comfortable recommending the accessory to our general readership.

As a wearable accessory, Apple’s minimalist design is generally on-target: it’s fashion-neutral and comfortable, thus there’s no visual or functional barrier precluding most people from giving it a try. Like the prior version, Apple has managed to make the latest Lanyard Headphones look less goofy than earlier, similar entries from other companies, while preserving the user’s ability to adjust the necklace’s length to their own neck and chest size needs. The only step down from the prior model is its use of the aforementioned white plastic iPod nano clip rather than the metal one of its predecessor. In addition to the fact that this clip fits only second-generation iPod nanos, not original ones, its white coloration only matches the plastic accents on the sub-$200 aluminum models, and looks cheaper than before. Unlike the prior metal clip, the white plastic one doesn’t match Apple’s all-black 8GB iPod nano model, either, and Apple has announced no plans to release any black accessories to satisfy earlier customer demands.

On a mostly positive note, we were satisfied during testing that the plastic attachment held our new nanos firmly, using its headphone port and locking into its Dock Connector port for full-bottom reinforced suport. Over many months of ownership, our earlier, similarly designed Lanyard Headphones didn’t exhibit problems, but we’ve noted several comments on that model – mostly from younger readers – that the connector can come loose from your nano under certain circumstances. Exercise caution and this shouldn’t be an issue.

Last year’s Lanyard Headphones included Apple’s stock black foam-covered earbuds, which we described as fine from an audio standpoint, but not standouts for the dollar on comfort or isolation. This year’s model incorporates Apple’s newest, better pack-ins, which are more comfortable, capable of providing modestly better isolation in some ears, and tend to deliver better apparent bass response as a consequence. We affirmatively prefer the sound and comfort of these newer Lanyard Headphones, not by a huge factor, but enough that they’re surely better than what came before.

Our real problem with these Headphones continues to be simple: the price. Like you, we actually buy the Apple products we cover, and we try to ask ourselves the same question you would whenever we reach the cash register – is this worth the price? In our opinion, as with last year’s model, the answer remains no – you can do better on sound quality, isolation, and looks for the dollar, assuming you’re willing to compromise on wearing the nano around your neck. The prior Lanyard Headphones stood out visually only because of their single flashy metal piece, which properly matched both white and black iPod nanos, but this year’s even more plasticy pairing of rope and stock earbuds looks less cheaper than before, and the fact that it’s in no way color-cued to the black nano will continue to put some people off. In our view, unless you can find the Lanyard Headphones at a significant discount or really need to wear your new nano at chest level, enjoy your nano’s packed-in earbuds and save your earphone money for something substantially better.

Apple iPod In-Ear Headphones

I went to a bookstore the other day to pick up a magazine. Since I knew what I wanted and where to find it, I left my iPod turned on and my earphones in while walking through the aisles. I left them in while waiting in line to checkout. When I was called up the register, I finally removed them so I could interact with the cashier like a normal human being.

“Hi, how are you?” he said.

“Good, how’s it going?” I replied.

“Alright. Hey, how’s that iPod sound? You get good sound out of that?”

And that’s when I got to show off my new In-Ear Headphones. The earbuds that come standard with iPods are really pretty good as far as earbuds go, but for serious listening in noisy environments they don’t quite cut it. Old-school over the ear heaphones (aka “Cans”) deliver much better sound while also cutting out unwanted background noise, which is key if you use your iPod in urban environments, on airplanes, or in other places where you’d rather not be distracted from, I don’t know, Kenny Rogers’ greatest hits.

Last November I reviewed Macally’s Noise Reduction Headphones. These are big white cans with a twist: battery-powered electronic circuitry cuts out certain noise frequencies before they can come between you and your music. Macally isn’t the only company to make headphones like this (Bose, for instance, makes a few models), but they make a pretty affordable pair that come in white/grey to match your Pod, sound pretty good, and fold up for easy storage.

Problem is, if you’re like the cashier I was talking to, you might not “do cans.” “No way,” he said. “I can’t wear those things anymore.”

Enter the in-ear headphone, or “canalphone”. After reading my Macally review, a few readers emailed to tell me about earbuds designed to push into the wearer’s ear canal, effectively using the canal itself to enhance the sound while also sealing out external noise (or at least some of it). A few folks mentioned Etymotic’s ER-6 canalphones as exemplary products. Only problem is they retail for $139. Shure also makes a model for around one hundred dollars.

Apple must have caught wind of this trend, because along with the iPod mini they’ve now introduced their own In-Ear Headphones. Priced at a reasonable $39.99, the In-Ears bridge the gap between normal earbuds that lack in bass response and let in all kinds of external noise and pricier canalphones and bulky noise reduction headphones. They also work with any standard 1/8″ stereo headphone jack found on a laptop, CD player, walkman, etc … not just with iPods.

The In-Ears are basically earbuds that come with silicone caps that push into your ear canal — not far enough to do any damage, but far enough to improve bass response and seal out other noise. Think of them sort of like the earplugs parents make their kids wear at concerts, except that the idea is to seal the noise in instead of keeping it out. The bonus is that you can actually set your iPod to a lower volume level while still getting the full effect of your music.

The Apple models work pretty well, but they’re finicky and not quite perfect. They come in a plastic carrying case with three sets of silicone caps to fit different sizes of ear canals. I tried all three and settled for the Mediums. Once the phones were properly shoved — I mean fitted — in my ears, they sounded pretty good. Bass response was definitely better than with standard earbuds, and the noise cancelling effect was somewhere between being underwater and wearing earmuffs. I mean that in a good way — I could hear my own breathing, humming, and gum chewing fairly loudly, but I also couldn’t hear too much of my fellow subway rider’s conversations. Definitely a good thing.

The problem with these phones is that they have a tendency to slip loose. Moving my head, turning my head, accidentally tugging on the connector cord — all of these things pried the earphones loose enough from my ears that I had to push them back in. When the phones are properly settled into my canals, they really sound quite good — especially considering how small and light they are. Paying a hundred dollars extra for the Etymotics supposedly not only gets you better electronics, but it also gets you foam and silicone caps that look like they’re designed to stay in your ears a little better. After a couple of days the Apple silicone caps seemed to adapt to the shape of my ear canals a little bit and the slippage lessened.

I explained all of this to the cashier at the bookstore. He seemed interested, and then he said something.

“Try the Ety’s. I hear they’re really good.”

Altec Lansing UHS307 AirFit Earclips-S with Microphone

Five months have passed since Altec Lansing released its first pairs of “iPhone-compatible” earphones — an over-the-ear pair called UHP307 ($40) and earbuds called UHP301 ($50), both billed as iPhone-ready because their headphone plugs were thin enough to fit Apple’s recessed headphone port. We featured both earphones in First Looks at the time, but didn’t review them because they didn’t offer a complete iPhone headset experience: they were little more than iPhone-sized iPod earphones, lacking the microphones and call/playback control buttons of other true iPhone-ready options, including Apple’s packed-in iPhone Stereo Headset. Altec promised that those features would soon arrive in an update.

In late November, the updated versions arrived: the UHS307 ($40) and UHS301 ($50) offer the same earphone designs, cables, and plugs as their predecessors, but now come with four things not found in the UHP-series designs: an in-line microphone, a single-button call/playback control, a shirt clip, and a 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter cord for use with non-iPhone mobile phones. Altec also released another model, UHS306 ($90), which replaces the other models’ earbuds with in-canal earphones. Each of the models comes with silicone rubber eartips, a zippered neoprene carrying case, and attractive gray fabric cords; they’re all otherwise primarily made from gray plastic, and feature in-line volume controls in a box that’s separate from the microphone, if one’s included.

Basically, all five of these earphones strike us as a step or two back from the Etymotic-developed earphones Altec was selling a couple of years ago under its inMotion label, introducing elements from Plantronics’ cell phone headsets that don’t necessarily improve the iPhone or iPod earphone experience. Our separate reviews briefly discuss each version in relation to the others, as well as other iPhone-specific headsets we’ve tested.

Of the group, our favorites were the UHS307 and UHP307, though their identical pricing and UHS307’s superior pack-ins and features make it the better buy of the two. In essence, both of these earphones are somewhat overcomplicated alternatives to Sennheiser’s OMX70, which itself was a slightly overcomplicated alternative to Sony’s MDR-EX81. The premise behind all three models is that earbuds are suspended from rubber-coated “over-the-ear” mounts in order to keep the buds inside your ears. But whereas Sony made the mounts simple and designed the buds to fit in your ear canals, Sennheiser and now Altec Lansing use large iPod pack-in-style earbuds. You try to fit the earbuds into your ears, and they sort of do, sort of don’t; only one size of rubber eartip is included, so some ears will do better than others.

We found the Sony design a lot easier to fit onto our ears: the MDR-EX81 rubber mounts are simple and worked perfectly for us. Altec instead uses a far larger ear cuff that has multiple layers of rubber and a C-shaped metal bar inside. The positives of this design is that it’s firm and enables you to adjust the earbud’s height and tilt for your ear, but we didn’t find the in-ear result as snug as Sony’s; some users will definitely have different results.

UHS307 and UHP307’s saving grace is their sound quality. These particular earbuds sound a lot like Apple’s, with a reasonably wide dynamic range and enough high- and low-end presence to satisfy typical listeners; the only issue is getting the earphones properly positioned in your ears to let you hear the sound. Callers described the UHS307’s microphone as sounding almost identical to the one in Apple’s iPhone Stereo Headset—natural and smooth, not optimized for intelligibility but rather designed to make your voice sound normal. At times, they noted that the Altec mic was 10% or so lower in volume than Apple’s, but otherwise they liked how we sounded, and vice-versa. As with all of the mic-equipped headsets, a mute switch for the mic is included on the back of the in-line volume control box, should you want to stop your caller from hearing what you’re saying.

Given that they’re priced the same as earphones that come with in-line microphones, remotes, and 2.5mm adapters, our ratings of the UHP301 and UHP307 are a hint lower than the mic-equipped UHS301 and UHS307 versions, respectively, but it’s worth noting that we’re a bit disappointed with each of the earphones in this collection. Altec Lansing was generally on the right track with its Etymotic-developed InMotion earphones, but something seems to have gone wrong here—comfort, isolation, and style have all decreased rather than improved in this new generation of offerings. It sounds almost silly to say this, but we want our old Altec back, and soon.

Though we consider the UHS307 to be a good earphone overall, and the best of this bunch, the others are varying shades of “OK” save for the UHP306, which costs around twice the price of the others, and doesn’t approach the sound or comfort of past inMotion designs. It rates a D- in accordance with our policy on defective products, because of the frayed state it was in when received.

Altec Lansing UHP336 Snugfit In-ear Earphone

When the good folks at Altec Lansing told us they were sending us their flagship headset we were very excited. We stopped by an visited Altec Lansing (and their parent company Plantronics) and this year’s Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas, we were introduced to the 2008 Upgrader Series that included headphones with the unique SnugFit design.

The SnugFit headphone that we have in our hands is the Altec Lansing UHP336 designed to proved noise-isolation and high-fidelity even at lower listening levels. The UHP336 features an in-ear design with your choice of silicon ear-tips or pads that conform to your ear for comfort and noise reduction. Altec Lansing fitted the headphones with a precision vented Armature Driver for professional musician-grade sound quality.

Priced at $129, the UHP336’s in-ear fit and design is similar to other earbud-type headsets in that they use the rubber eartips to block out noise.
