As technology continues to evolve into new formats, the need for different hardware to use these devices also changes. This is true for the connectors used to hook up the latest models of TV, stereos and home theaters. Many of these electronic devices in the past would use a variety of types of cable. This made it very confusing when hooking up these devices. However, this has changed. Today, one type of cable has become standard for many of today’s newer devices. This cable is known as HDMI (high definition media interface). Since many of today’s home theatre components utilize HDMI cables, there may be some point where you need to purchase them.

When purchasing HDMI cables, it is a good idea to first check the requirements of your equipment. Typically, there will be some sort of manual accompanying your device as well as the device from which you are outputting. Knowing the necessary version requirements is important when purchasing HDMI cables. For example, if your HDTV needs HDMI 1.1 cables but your video game system requires HDMI 1.2 cables, then you always want to purchase the older version. In this illustrated case you would purchase HDMI 1.1 cables. Another thing that is helpful to know is that HDMI cables in versions 1.3 or higher are made to be compatible with older models. So, you could even purchase HDMI 1.3 cables for the example as well. Either way will work for this situation. Some devices are built to use any type of HDMI cable. If you find yourself in this situation, then base your selection on the output type you desire.

As you shop for HDMI cables, it is also helpful to be aware of the improvements made in version 1.3. This version of HDMI cables uses what is known as “Deep Colour” Technology. What this means for you the consumer is that you will have a much richer and deeper video output. This can provide much brighter colors as well as richer black hues. Version 1.3 can also support high resolution audio better than previous versions of HDMI cables.

It was made by the people at I Want One Of Those as an April Fools joke. Upon seeing the impressive sunglasses on their catalog and then pressing the “Buy” button, it will tell you that it’s April Fools Day and you’ve been had. And sadly enough, the Maverix HUD sunglasses has been taken off the website catalog not long after that. Now people have to wait until next year for the next surprise. Gold-bodied iPhone costs just £23k

Goldstriker has struck the right cords (for a previleged few) many times before, but it seems that they have outdone themselves this innings. They have now replaced the whole body (not just the plating, mind) of an iPhone 3G with solid 22-carat gold and added 53 exquisite VVS1 diamonds to the Apple logo found on the back. It took four craftsmen and months of intricate work by hand to finally get this iPhone blinged out and needless to say, all that hard work don’t come cheap. This special iPhone 3G goes for no less than a staggering £22,995, roughly $34k or a kid’s college education. We are not sure if this includes an early shot at iPhone 3.0 OS, but who cares as long as it shiny all over right?

Seagate Replica mirrors Time Machine for Windows

Seagate started its week today by launching a device which comes closest to replicating the behavior of Apple’s Time Machine backup for Windows PCs. The Replica performs an automatic, continuous backup of an entire Windows system and lets users either restore all their third-party apps and documents after a crash or else return individual files that might have been deleted or lost. The drive maker promises a simple process where the drive will auto-install and configure itself over USB. A basic 250GB version is intended for single-PC backup on Windows XP or Vista and will sell for $130. In a variation from Apple’s approach, Seagate also has a $200 multi-PC version with 500GB of storage that includes a dock to serve two systems at once. Both editions should be available in May.

Verizon & Apple Media “iPad” Possibilty

Verizon Wireless is talking with Apple about distributing a “media pad” device, possibly called “iPad”, that would allow users to view photos, listen to music, watch high-definition videos and make calls over a Wi-Fi connection. Cupertino, California based Apple’s new device is much like Amazon’s Kindle electronic reader, only smaller in size with a larger touch screen.

Earlier this month, Verizon said it was looking to enter the electronic-book market, perhaps focusing on areas Amazon’s Kindle overlooks, such as college textbooks. Verizon is also in talks to bring the iPhone to its approaching fourth-generation, or 4G, network.

Sharp Water-Resistant, Solar-Powered Handset Has Written KDDI Allover

The device in the picture is more special than others. It is water-resistant and solar-powerd and it will arrive in Japan this June from KDDI. Sharp is the maker and we might expect it to make similar phones in the near future.

KDDI says that as little as 10 minutes of sun absorption will get you two hours of standby or about a minute of talk time. So what would exactly happen at night? No more phone calls? The sun can charge the 80% of the battery which sounds pretty good. That’s a great device for those people that always forget their chargers. All they would need will be some decent sunlight.

How much would you pay for such a phone? Prices and availability dates haven’t been officially announced yet.

What we know about the spec is that it will be faster than 2.0 by means of WiFi. Apparently, it utilizes technology that allows it to harness the speeds used by 802.11.

To ensure that your iPhone doesn’t depreciate in value, relying on casings to help avoid scratches and other potential damages is something you should consider. And one great casing in the market today comes from BeyzaCases MultiFlip.

Samsung hands-on: Impression, Instinct S30, more

Impression

While at the CTIA mobile expo this week, Electronista has tried Samsung’s new lineup of US devices and come away with early impressions. The Impression is undoubtedly the company’s flagship non-smartphone for the US and has likely one of the best-looking touchscreens of any device in the country, including the iPhone: while it’s a bit smaller at 3.2 inches, the active matrix OLED display is simply stunning. Colors are extremely vibrant and don’t exhibit the gradient banding artifacts often seen on mobile LCDs. It’s also bright enough to stand out even in the difficult lighting of a show booth. However, an initial test of the controls doesn’t suggest it will challenge Apple in other respects. While we appreciate the TouchWiz interface itself for its relative simplicity, the Impression uses a resistive touchscreen that makes it slightly difficult to use. Accidental inputs and overshoots are unusually common. The keyboard is workable, but it’s also not particularly special. At this stage, we would largely recommend the Impression for those who intend to watch a large amount of (compatible) videos or will work often with photos. It ships on the 7th for $200 on an AT&T contract.Although it’s technically more limited than the Impression, we’ve enjoyed the Instinct S30 more: while it’s ultimately just a refinement of the original, it’s still a very capable device and has a much nicer, curved design. Sprint’s custom interface is still fairly easy to use with large icons and simple lists. We also liked the relatively light touch needed for the resistive screen and the localized haptic feedback. That said, it appears that Sprint may have dropped its hopes that the Instinct series would stand against the iPhone as a rival; even with significantly opened Java app development, the phone has very nearly the same specifications and is now simply a good mid-range phone rather than a “halo” model for the company. It should cost $130 after discounts when it ships on the 19th.

With the Mondi WiMAX tablet, however, we couldn’t help but be somewhat disappointed. While it goes to great lengths to produce a tablet-ready interface, certain design decisions and the choice of using Windows Mobile both render it somewhat clumsy: it depends on the stylus and doesn’t support gestures or other more intuitive commands; it’s telling that the company uses Opera instead of Internet Explorer Mobile for web browsing. Sluggishness is also commonplace in the OS itself. We’d also note that the WiMAX link was slow, though this was an indoors test environment and is hard to gauge as a test of real speeds. The keyboard was acceptable given the size, but the directional pad is too small for a large amount of navigation. Clear

As for Samsung’s other new Windows Mobile device, the Propel Pro, we were significantly more impressed. Even though it’s superficially an upgrade to the Propel, the combination of a real smartphone-grade OS as well as the new shell do create a much more interesting device. The keyboard is comfortably large, but we particularly liked the use of a joystick in the center instead of a directional pad. It’s confusing at first but is subtler and better-built than the inexpensive phone’s simple click controls. Samsung won’t convert users of BlackBerries or other rival devices, but it should be persuasive to some new users who want a messaging-heavy but still very flexible phone. It ships on the 14th, and early pricing sits at $150 on a 2-year plan.
